Lake Forest Climbs MWC Standings with Pair of League Shutouts
Foresters blank Grinnell at home, Beloit on the road

Attila Schmidt has recorded at least one point in each of the Foresters' last five games.
BELOIT, WI - The Forester men’s soccer team remained in contention for a spot in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament with a pair of shutouts against league opponents over the weekend (October 8-9). Lake Forest hosted and defeated Grinnell College 4-0 Saturday morning and then won 1-0 at Beloit College Sunday afternoon. The Foresters are now 7-3-1 overall this season and 3-3-0 in MWC games. Grinnell fell to 3-8-2 overall and 1-6-0 in the league. Beloit’s record dropped to 5-6-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the conference.

Junior Anthony Buti (Geneva, IL/Geneva) put Lake Forest on the scoreboard at the 26:30 mark of Saturday’s opening period. The unassisted goal was his first of the season and the only tally of the half.

Senior Jon Duke (Eugene, OR/Marist) scored his team-high fifth goal of the year just 3:48 into the second period and classmate Alex Lofgren (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) followed that up with his second score of the season at 62:26. Freshman Steven Stavropoulos (Vernon Hills, IL/Stevenson) assisted on both goals. Sophomore Attila Schmidt (Akron, OH/Western Reserve Academy) scored the final goal of the contest, unassisted, at 78:29. It was his fourth of 2005.

The Forester defense held the Pioneers without a shot on goal, enabling sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Elperin (Highland Park, IL/Lake Forest Academy) to record the shutout without a single save.

Elperin needed three saves to blank the Buccaneers on Sunday, extending his scoreless streak to 272 minutes and 34 seconds.

The only goal of the contest came in the 58th minute when Schmidt’s corner kick was knocked in by Stavropoulos for what turned out to be the game winner. It was the fourth goal of the season for Stavropoulos, who has recorded eight points in the last three games. Schmidt now leads the team with eight assists and 16 points.

Lake Forest will continue MWC play with a pair of league games next weekend (October 15-16). The Foresters will play at Illinois College at 3:00 Saturday afternoon and at Monmouth College Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
