Lake Forest Wins at Grinnell, Ties Beloit at Home
Echeverry records five points on the weekend

LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College men’s soccer team claimed a 4-2 victory at Grinnell College on Saturday (September 25) and played Beloit College to a 3-3 tie at home on Sunday (September 26). The Foresters are now 6-1-2 overall and 3-1-2 in league play.

Junior Tino Castrejon (Highwood, IL/Highwood) gave the visitors the early lead at Grinnell with his second goal of the year just 4:18 into the contest. The Pioneers tied the game at 38:00 and the rest of the first half was scoreless.

Junior Sam Figueroa (Bartlett, IL/Bartlett) put the Foresters back on top at the 66:44 mark. Senior John Karner (Gurnee,IL/Warren Township) was credited with the assist on Figueroa’s second goal of the season. The home team tied the score again with fewer than five minutes to play but sophomore Walter Echeverry (Glenview, IL/Maine Township East) scored the game-winner at 86:14 off a pass from Figueroa. Echeverry then assisted freshman Ben Levy (Lincoln, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) on an insurance goal with 1:52 remaining.

Sophomore goalkeeper Pat Witwicki (Lake Villa, IL/Antioch) earned the victory, raising his record on the year to 4-1-0.

As he was for the Foresters’ other tie this season, freshman Jake Elperine (Highland Park, IL/Lake Forest Academy) was in goal for Sunday’s stalemate with Beloit. He is now 2-0-2 this year.

Figueroa’s third goal of the season came at 14:23 and gave the home team an early advantage. Echeverry and Levy each earned an assist on the play. The visitors responded with consecutive goals at 19:24 and 33:39 to take the lead themselves. The final goal of the first 45 minutes came off the foot of Tino Castrejon (Highwood, IL/Highwood), his third of the season, at 34:48.

Lake Forest regained the lead just 118 seconds into the second half. Levy scored the goal, his team-high fifth of the year, and both Echeverry and sophomore Jordan Lange (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North) were credited with assists. Beloit tied the score again at 72:01.

Neither team was able to score again during the final 18 minutes of regulation or in either of two 10-minute overtime periods. It was the first tie in 43 meetings between the programs.

The Foresters will play again on Saturday (October 2) at home against Carthage College. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. Lake Forest will resume league play the following Saturday (October 9) at home against Carroll College in the Foresters’ homecoming game.
