Byers and Schmidt each score first Forester goal

Seth Byers scored the Foresters' first goal of the season.
LISLE, IL - The Forester men’s soccer team opened the 2005 season with a 2-1 victory at Benedictine University Tuesday (September 6) night. It was Lake Forest’s fourth consecutive win over the Eagles and the third in a row by the same score. The loss dropped Benedictine’s record to 0-3-0.

The Foresters’ first goal of the season was scored by sophomore transfer Seth Byers (Cincinnati, OH/Cincinnati Colerain) just 1:57 into the contest. It turned out to be the first half’s only score.

The visitors took a 2-0 lead at the 71:41 mark on sophomore Attila Schmidt’s (Akron, OH/Western Reserve Academy) first career goal. He was assisted by freshman Wade Torgeson (New Glarus, WI/New Glarus). The Eagles cut the lead in half just 12 seconds later but were unable to tie the score.

Sophomore Jacob Elperin (Highland Park, IL/Lake Forest Academy) started the game in goal for the Foresters and earned the victory. Freshman Sam Malmberg (Concord, NH/St. Paul's School) entered the contest late in the first half and was replaced by Elperin late in the second. Each goalie recorded a pair of saves.

Lake Forest out-shot the Eagles 5-2 in the first 45 minutes and 6-5 after intermission. The Foresters also had six corner kick opportunities while allowing Benedictine just one.

Lake Forest will play its home and Midwest Conference opener Saturday (September 10) afternoon against Knox College. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
