2006 Preview: Time To Move Up

Alex Godin and the Foresters will look to reach new heights this spring.

LAKE FOREST, IL - After finishing near the middle of the pack each of the last three seasons, Head Coach Chris Kane and the Forester men’s tennis team are looking to move up in 2006. “We have a lot of hard workers on this team and they’ve become much better players during the course of each year,” comments Kane. “But each guy is competing at a lineup spot higher than he should and that has prevented that effort and improvement from translating into more victories. I anticipate a much different story in 2006.”

Despite the lack of an elite player at the top of the Foresters’ lineup, Sebastian Bienia and Rob Burda enter their senior season with a combined career record of 119-115 in singles and doubles play and were 7-4 as partners at number two doubles last year. “Sebastian, Rob, and fellow senior Nick Sandner are the team’s leaders and are extremely reliable when put in a position to succeed,” states Kane. “When they perform well, so does the rest of the squad.”

Alex Godin owns a 24-15 singles mark at the halfway point of his collegiate career and, as the only junior on the 2006 projected starting lineup, he will also be relied upon for both production and leadership.

In addition to the continued improvement of players like Burda, Bienia, Sandner, and Godin, what has Kane excited about his team’s chances for success in 2006 is one of the program’s best recruiting classes in nearly a decade. “I’m anxious for the season to begin because this team will have a great mix of talent and veteran leadership,” he states. “There’s no telling how far that will take us. I also look forward to berths in the (four-team) conference tournament being the norm instead of a goal for the future. Our next objective would then be to challenge for the league title with players capable of drawing national attention to Lake Forest.”

This is clearly an exciting time for the men’s tennis program. We’ll know by the end of April whether things came together the way Coach Kane hopes and predicts. If they do, a significant climb up the conference standings and perhaps even the program’s fifth league title will be the focus of the 2006 season summary.

“I’m anxious for the season to begin because this team will have a great mix of talent and veteran leadership. There’s no telling how far that will take us.”
