FORESTERS CLAIM FIRST CONFERENCE TITLE IN OVER TWO DECADES
The '99 Lake Forest men's tennis team, with five of their top six players juniors, was supposed to be a year away from claiming the school's first conference title in 20-plus years.  But someone forgot to tell the six team members who won 33 of the 38 matches they played at the Midwest Conference Championships in Madison, WI and brought home the team title and five of the nine individual titles.  On Friday, the Foresters disposed of Beloit (4-0) and Grinnell (5-0) to win their first conference championship since 1978.  Saturday saw two singles champions crowned in juniors Dave Kelly at No. 1 and Guerin Williams at No. 6.  Although the results through the first two days could be easily explained, if not expected by the Foresters themselves, it was what happened on Sunday that surprised the entire conference.  Second-year Head Coach Chad Eisele expounded, "We felt like we had a good chance to win the team title and our singles play has been strong all season, but to completely dominate the doubles capped off a great all-around weekend.  Our doubles teams played very focused.  We knew we needed to finished well on Sunday to secure the points title and we did."
On Friday, the Foresters, playing from the top seed in the South division, defeated Beloit in the semifinals and advanced to play Grinnell, a team they narrowly defeated 4-3 two weeks earlier.  But the results weren't nearly as close this time around, as the Foresters won at No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles and all three doubles to secure the 5-0 victory.  "On Friday we felt we had the upper hand on Beloit," commented Eisele.  "We were surprised to see Grinnell in the finals and were actually looking forward to playing Ripon, who had beaten us last year in the finals.  But we did a great job of keeping our concentration and getting the job done."
While Kelly and Williams won conference singles titles, Shane Bell (No. 2), Ray Ro (No. 4), and Courtney Barr (No. 5) advanced to the finals in their bracket and Jacob Wert at No. 3 lost in the semifinals.  It was the second consecutive year that Lake Forest has advanced five of their six singles players to the championship match.  It was also the second year that Dave Kelly ended up on top of the MWC.  "Dave had an unbelievable weekend," added Eisele.  "He won two three-setters to win at No. 1 singles.  In the semifinals, he lost the first set and was down 1-4 in the second set and 4-5 in the third before coming back and winning.  He is, without a doubt, our number one.  The bigger the match, the better he plays."
Kelly added the first doubles championship of his career the following day when he teamed with Williams at No. 2 to win the title.  Bell and Ro won at No. 3.  But arguably the most impressive Forester win of the weekend, and definitely the biggest upset, came at No. 1, where Barr and Wert defeated the 14th and 4th ranked teams in the regions in route to their championship.  Coach Eisele added, "It was redeeming for Courtney and Jacob to win at No. 1.  They had been struggling all season, but came up big on Sunday."
