Foresters Win Two of Three Matches over the Weekend
Team falls to Grinnell before defeated Illinois C. and North Central

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College men’s tennis team won two of three matches at home over the weekend (March 31-April 1), including one of two in Midwest Conference South Division play. The Foresters fell 6-0 to three-time defending league champion Grinnell College Saturday morning but rebounded for a 9-0 victory over Illinois College, another conference foe, that afternoon. Lake Forest then hosted North Central College Sunday morning and defeated the Cardinals 5-4. Both teams were scheduled to take on Milwaukee School of Engineering in the afternoon but those matches were canceled due to rain. The Foresters are now 9-2 overall and 1-1 in divisional play this year.

Due to potential time constraints, only singles matched were contested between Grinnell and Lake Forest. The closest came at numbers two and six, where freshmen Alex Presman (Deerfield, Ill/Deerfield) and Joe Campagna (Elmwood Park, Ill./Fenwick), respectively, were defeated 10-7.

Illinois College had just four players so Lake Forest won by forfeit at numbers five and six singles and three doubles. Junior Tim Tierney (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) recorded a 10-4 victory at the top singles spot in the lineup and Presman prevailed 10-1 at number two. Sophomore Will Hiemenz (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) and senior Ben Larsen (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) blanked their opponents 10-0 at numbers three and four, respectively. Freshman Ben Ma (Arcadia, Calif./Webb School) and sophomore Ricky Galvez (Poolville, N.Y./Hamilton Central) teamed up for an 8-4 triumph at number one doubles and Larsen and Hiemenz won 8-1 at number two.

The Foresters won two of the three doubles matches against North Central. Freshman Joel Hainsfurther (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and sophomore Andrew Fretter (Bloomfield, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) posted an 8-6 victory at number two and Hiemenz and Campagna won 8-1 at number three In singles, Presman edged out the Cardinals’ number two player 11-9, Fretter blanked his opponent 10-0 at number five, and Campagna won 10-1 at six.

Lake Forest will complete the MWC South Division portion of its schedule next Saturday (April 7). The Foresters will travel to Knox College for a 9:00 a.m. match and will play at Monmouth College at 12:30 in the afternoon.
