Lake Forest Splits Four Matches over Three Days
Team is now 13-5 this season

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Forester men’s tennis team recorded two wins and as many losses over the last three days (April 14-16). Lake Forest won 5-4 at Carroll College on Saturday, fell 5-4 to Elmhurst College and 5-3 to St. Norbert College at home on Sunday, and hosted and defeated Concordia University Chicago 9-0 on Monday. The Foresters are now 13-5 on the season, matching the second-highest victory total in team history. The 2000 squad holds the record with 17 wins.

Carroll won two of the three doubles matches with Lake Forest junior Tim Tierney (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) and freshman Alex Presman (Deerfield, Ill/Deerfield) posting an 8-3 victory at number one for the visitors. Presman also won 6-2, 6-0 at number two singles and the Foresters claimed victories at each of the bottom three spots in the lineup. Freshman Joel Hainsfurther (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) prevailed 6-2, 6-3 at number four, sophomore Andrew Fretter (Bloomfield, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) triumphed 6-4, 7-5 at five, and freshman Joe Campagna (Elmwood Park, Ill./Fenwick) won 6-3, 6-2 at six.

Campagna and sophomore Will Hiemenz (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) registered an 8-5 victory at number three against Elmhurst but the Foresters fell at the other two doubles positions. Hainsfurther edged out his opponent 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) at number four singles, Hiemenz won 6-0, 6-1 at five, and Campagna prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at six.

After falling to St. Norbert at each of the three doubles spots in the lineup, Lake Forest won three of the five singles matches that were played to completion. Hiemenz posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory at number three, Fretter won 6-1, 6-1 at five, and Campagna convincingly defeated the Green Knights’ number six player 6-1, 6-0. The match at number two was unable to be completed because of darkness.

Tierney and Presman won 8-5 at number one doubles against Concordia Chicago. Hainsfurther and Fretter prevailed 8-4 at two and Hiemenz and Campagna blanked their opponents 8-0 at three. Tierney triumphed 6-3, 6-4 at number one singles, Presman posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at two, and Hiemenz routed Concordia’s number three player 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Ben Ma (Arcadia, Calif./Webb School) came out on top of a close match with a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) win at four, Fretter defeated the Cougars’ number five player 6-1, 6-1, and Campagna raised his singles record to 15-2 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at six.

Lake Forest’s next four matches will all be on the road. The Foresters will play at Beloit College at 4:00 Friday (April 19) afternoon and at Lakeland College at 6:00 the next night. On Saturday (April 21) the team will travel to Carthage College where they will take on Carthage at 10:00 a.m. and Luther College at 2:00 in the afternoon.
