Foresters Take Two and Secure Spot in Conference Tournament
Burda goes 4-0 on the day

AURORA, IL - The Lake Forest College men’s tennis team won a pair of matches on Saturday (April 17) over Monmouth College in the morning and at Aurora University in the afternoon. The victory over Monmouth and Knox College’s loss at Grinnell College later in the day locked up the South Division’s #2 seed for the Foresters in the four-team Midwest Conference Team Championship Tournament that will be held in Madison, Wisconsin on Friday (April 23). Lake Forest finished 3-1 in divisional play and are now 10-10 overall.

The Foresters took five of the six singles matches and two of three in doubles. Freshman Michael Jolly (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) and sophomore Robert Burda (Meridian, ID/Meridian) teamed to knock off a Monmouth pair 8-3 at number two doubles. The Foresters’ number three team, senior Luke Figora (Yorkville, IL/Yorkville) and Sebastian Bienia (Lemont, IL/Lemont), recorded an 8-6 victory.

Figora and freshman Alex Godin (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) highlighted Lake Forest’s dominant performance in singles competition. Figora beat his opponent 6-0, 6-2 at number four and Godin notched a 6-3, 6-0 win at number five. Burda and Bienia added a pair of 6-2, 6-3 triumphs at numbers three and six, respectively, and Jolly defeated his opponent at number two 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

At Aurora, the Foresters were victorious again at numbers two and three doubles. Jolly and Burda put together an 8-0 blanking at number two and Figora and Bienia won by forfeit at number three. Lake Forest was also successful in numbers three through six singles matches. At number three, Burda recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win, Figora notched a pair of 6-0 shutouts at number four, Godin added a 6-0, 6-1 win at number five, while Bienia won at number six by forfeit.

The Foresters’ 3-1 regular season league record lands them into the team conference tournament for the first time since 2000. Lake Forest will battle Ripon College (10-12, 3-1), the top seed in the MWC North Division at 9:30 a.m. on Friday (April 23). The team will either play St. Norbert College (11-4, 3-1), the north’s #2 seed, or Grinnell College (21-5, 4-0) the south’s top seeded team in the championship or consolation match at 1:30 p.m.
