GRINNELL, Iowa - The Forester men’s tennis team was not in action this weekend but an 8-1 victory by Grinnell College over visiting Monmouth College on Saturday (April 19) clinched the top seed in the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament for Grinnell and the second seed for Lake Forest.

The top two teams in both of the MWC’s five-team divisions earn a spot in the tourney. Grinnell finished 4-0 in South Division while Lake Forest was 3-1. St. Norbert College was 4-0 and Lawrence University 3-1 in the North Division. The team tournament will be played at the Nielsen Center in Madison, Wisconsin, on Friday, April 25. Lake Forest will take on St. Norbert and Grinnell will face Lawrence in the semifinals at 8:30 a.m. and the championship and consolation matches will follow. The Foresters won 7-2 at St. Norbert and 5-4 at Lawrence but fell 8-1 at Grinnell during the regular season.

Six positional singles tournaments including players from all 10 teams in the league will be played the following day and the three doubles tourneys will occur on Sunday (April 27). The league’s top four teams will be determined by Friday’s team tournament and a point system used during singles and doubles play will round out the league standings.

Sixth-year Lake Forest head coach Chris Kane will be taking his squad to the team tournament for the second time. The Foresters finished fourth in 2004 and won their last conference title in 1999.
