Sebastian Bienia was the runner-up at number six singles.
MADISON, WI - The Lake Forest College men's tennis team placed fourth in the Midwest Conference Team Championship on Friday (April 23). Ripon College defeated the Foresters 4-1 in the semifinals and St. Norbert College knocked them off in the third place match 4-3. Grinnell defeated Ripon to claim the team championship. Lake Forest finished the year with a 10-13 overall record. The conference singles tournaments were played on Saturday (April 24) and the doubles on Sunday (April 25).

Senior Luke Figora (Yorkville, IL/Yorkville) earned the Foresters' only point against Ripon with his 6-2, 6-0 victory at number four singles.

St. Norbert earned the doubles point with wins at numbers one and two. Figora and sophomore Sebastian Bienia (Lemont, IL/Lemont) triumphed 8-6 at number three. Freshmen Michael Jolly (Jacksonville, IL/Jacksonville) prevailed (6-4, 6-3) at number two singles, classmate Alex Godin (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) defeated the Green Knights' number five player (6-2, 2-6, 6-1), and Bienia won (7-5, 6-3) at number six.

The Foresters had one finalist, two semifinalists, and a pair of consolation champions on Saturday. Bienia won twice to reach the title match at number six but finished as the runner-up for the second straight year. Jolly (#2) and Godin (#5) each won once before falling in the semifinals. Rob Burda (Meridian, ID/Meridian) and Figora each started with a loss before winning three times in the consolation bracket at numbers two and three, respectively. Sophomore Nick Sandner (Lake Bluff, IL/Lake Forest) lost to the eventual number one singles champion and fell again in the consolation semifinals.

On Sunday, Jolly and Burda won twice at number two to reach the semifinals. Figora and Bienia had a first round bye at number three, posted a victory in the quarterfinals, and also fell in the semis. After a bye, Sandner and Godin were defeated first by the number one doubles champions and then by the consolation champs.

Grinnell scored 96 points on Saturday and Sunday. Ripon was second with 52 and St. Norbert third with 51. Both Lake Forest and Beloit College scored 39 but the Foresters had already secured fourth place by qualifying for the team championship tourney. Lawrence University (38 points), Knox College (31), Monmouth College (16), Carroll College (14), and Illinois College rounded out the field.

Lake Forest's last team tournament appearance had been in 2000 when the squad placed second. The Foresters slipped to seventh in 2001 but have moved up a spot each of the last three seasons.
