MADISON, Wis. - The Lake Forest College men’s tennis team defeated St. Norbert College 5-0 on Friday (April 25) in the semifinals of the Midwest Conference Team Championship Tournament before falling 5-1 to Grinnell College in the title match. It was Grinnell’s fifth consecutive league championship and sixth in seven seasons. It was the highest placing for the Foresters since their last runner-up finish in 2000 and Friday’s decisions give them a final record of 16-6 this year.

The Foresters won all three doubles matches to begin the contest against St. Norbert. Junior Rocky Tektumanidze (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield) and sophomore Alex Presman (Deerfield, Ill/Deerfield) triumphed 8-5 at #1, freshman Jon Flaksman (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) teamed up with junior Andrew Fretter (Bloomfield, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) for an 8-2 victory at #2, and sophomore Joe Campagna (Elmwood Park, Ill./Fenwick) and Chris Paterakos (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) prevailed 8-4 at #3.

The match ended when Lake Forest recorded its fifth team point so just two of the six singles contests were completed. Tektumanidze posted a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory at the top spot in the lineup and Fretter won 6-3, 6-4 at #4.

Grinnell took the top two doubles matches while Campagna and Paterakos earned the Foresters’ only point of the match with an 8-4 victory at #3.

The Pioneers also won at #1, #2, and #4 singles to clinch the title.

Play this weekend will continue as all 10 league teams compete in the six positional singles and three doubles tournaments on Saturday and Sunday (April 26-27), respectively, at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
