Lake Forest Players Reach MWC Title Matches at Six of Nine Positions
Flaksman, Fretter, and Paterakos accomplish the feat in both singles and doubles

MADISON, Wis. - The Forester men’s tennis team completed its 2008 schedule with the Midwest Conference positional singles and doubles tournaments over the weekend (April 26-27). Lake Forest players scored 63 points, trailing leader Grinnell College’s 105 but finishing well ahead of the 39 posted by third-place St. Norbert College.

In Saturday’s singles play, junior Andrew Fretter (Bloomfield, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood), sophomore Alex Presman (Deerfield, Ill/Deerfield), and freshmen Jon Flaksman (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Chris Paterakos (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) finished second in their respective flights. Presman won 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals at #2 and 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals before falling 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match. Flaksman recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the quarterfinals and won both sets by a 6-4 margin in the semifinals. He was edged out 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) in the final and finished the season with a 19-4 record. After routing his quarterfinal opponent 6-1, 6-1 at #4, Fretter came away with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 triumph in the semifinals but was defeated 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the title match. Paterakos won 6-4, 6-0 in the quarters and 6-2, 6-4 in the semis before falling 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the final.

Sophomore Joe Campagna (Elmwood Park, Ill./Fenwick) won 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals at #6 but dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision in the semifinals to the eventual champion. The Foresters’ #1 player, junior Rocky Tektumanidze (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield), won the first set but was unable to finish his first round match and retired.

Flaksman and Fretter also reached the championship match but fell 6-1, 6-1 at #2 doubles. They had recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals and a 6-4, 6-4 triumph in the semifinals to reach the flight’s final. Campagna and Paterakos prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in their first-round contest at #3 doubles and added a 6-2, 6-3 win in the semifinals before falling 6-0, 6-1 in the title match.

Presman partnered with junior Ricky Galvez (Poolville, N.Y./Hamilton Central) at #1 doubles and won 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. They were eliminated by a 6-4, 6-3 loss in the quarterfinals.

Lake Forest moved up three places from a fifth-place finish at last year’s tournament and there are no seniors on the roster.
