Lake Forest Finishes Fifth at Midwest Conference Tournament

MADISON, Wis. - The Forester men’s tennis team placed fifth with 36 points at the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament over the weekend (April 27-29). The top four spots were decided in Friday’s team tournament with Grinnell College taking home its fourth title in a row with a victory over Ripon College in the championship match. St. Norbert College defeated Monmouth College in the third-place match. In order, Knox College (26 points), Lawrence University (15), Carroll College (13), Beloit College (6), and Illinois College (0) rounded out the field.

Forester sophomore Andrew Fretter (Bloomfield, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) was the Foresters’ top performer in Saturday’s singles competition with his runner-up finish at number five. He reached the final after outlasting his opponent from Carroll 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

Sophomore Will Hiemenz (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) and freshmen Joel Hainsfurther (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and Joe Campagna (Elmwood Park, Ill./Fenwick) each posted one victory at numbers three, four, and six, respectively, before being eliminated.

Freshman Alex Presman (Deerfield, Ill/Deerfield) fell in the quarterfinals at number two singles but rebounded with three victories to win the consolation bracket.

In Sunday’s doubles play, Presman teamed with sophomore Rocky Tektumanidze (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield) for a 6-0, 6-1 round one victory at the top spot in the doubles lineup.

Both of the other two Lake Forest teams fell in their first match before rallying to win their respective consolation brackets. Fretter and Hainsfurther played at number two and Campagna partnered with junior Tim Tierney (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) at three.
