LF'S SHANE BELL EARNS FIRST TEAM ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN HONORS
Lake Forest College senior Shane
Bell, a men's tennis player from Scarborough, Ontario, has been named
to the GTE Academic All-American First Team. He is a member of the Spring
At-Large College Division unit, which is comprised of student-athletes
from NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA schools across the nation.
Bell, a 1999 Second Team Academic All-American, is a three-time Academic
All-Midwest Conference selection (1998, 1999, and 2000) and compiled a
59-17 career singles record, including a 15-6 mark this season. He played
the vast majority of his matches at the No. 2 position throughout his career.
Bell won a conference championship in 1999 at No. 3 doubles and helped
the Foresters to the team conference championship in the same year.
The GTE Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member
CoSIDA. To be eligible, an athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve
and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a scale of 4.00. Sports
information directors nominate eligible athletes from their schools who
are named to district teams prior to being voted upon on the national level.
CoSIDA has been selecting Academic All-America teams since 1952.
