JCKSON, Wis. - The Forester men’s tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday (March 24). Lake Forest ran its season-opening winning streak to seven matches with a 8-1 triumph over Lawrence University before falling 9-0 to UW-La Crosse. Lawrence fell to 2-5 and La Crosse is now 13-4.

The Foresters began the day by winning two of the three doubles matches against Lawrence. Junior Tim Tierney (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) and freshman Alex Presman (Deerfield, Ill/Deerfield) prevailed 9-8 (7-5) at number one and freshman Joel Hainsfurther (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) teamed with sophomore Andrew Fretter (Bloomfield, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) for an 8-2 victory at number two.

Tierney was also victorious in a tiebreak at the top spot in the singles lineup, defeating the Vikings’ best player 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7). Presman won 6-4, 6-2 at number two and sophomore Will Hiemenz (St. Louis, Mo./Chaminade) prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at number three. Like Tierney, Hainsfurther needed more than two sets in his 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) triumph at number four. Fretter posted a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory at number five and freshman Joe Campagna (Elmwood Park, Ill./Fenwick) remained perfect in singles play this season with a 6-2, 6-0 win at number six.

Hiemenz and Campagna came the closest to winning against La Crosse but fell 8-6 at number three doubles. In addition to the team’s winning streak being snapped, Campagna’s undefeated (7-0) mark in singles also came to an end in the match.

Lake Forest will begin Midwest Conference South Division play next Saturday (March 31) at home against Grinnell College and Illinois College. The matches will begin at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
