Men's Tennis Goes 2-0
Over the weekend, the men's tennis team faced two opponents on the same
day. Trinity International University and Knox College came to Lake
Forest to take on the Foresters.
Trinity played the Foresters at 9a.m. and Knox at 1p.m. Weather
was harsh, with strong winds throughout the day. Wind is not desirable
for tennis, and Lake Forest has had trouble on such days in the past.
Saturday was an exception. The Foresters went undefeated, walking
all over both teams.
In the morning, the reserves had a little trouble with doubles
and eventually lost the point. However, the starting six, all of
whom are seniors, more than made up the difference.
In what seemed like no time at all, the Foresters won four of the singles
matches to grab the victory. Senior co-captain Dave Kelly remained
on the court, fighting a long battle. Kelly was up against the top
seed from Trinity, a 25 year-old who spent time in the army.
"He's beaten a lot of good players, so it was definitely nice to win,"
said Kelly.
Kelly is anticipating a solid year, hopefully leading up to another
conference championship for both the team and himself. Senior Shane
Bell defeated his opponent quickly without losing a game.
After lunch, the Foresters returned to their home courts to face Knox
College. This was the first match in the Midwest conference for the
team, and what a perfect way to start off the schedule. After taking
the doubles point with little resistance, the Foresters went into singles
competition with confidence.
The top five singles positions for Lake Forest won handily. Kirkland
remained, slugging out a hard-fought contest on the court. After
hours of play, he fell 7-6, 7-6. The tow players were closely matched
and it was an entertaining pairing, with even the tiebreakers decided by
a close margin.
Going undefeated on the weekend by winning each match 6-1, is great
for the team. Starting the conference schedule with a huge victory
gets the team headed straight for their goal of a conference championship.
With the word out around the MWC that the Foresters are just as powerful
as expected, any conference opponent they face is a decided underdog.
With matches nearing against Carroll College and Beloit College, Lake Forest
may earn the label of the MWC juggernaut in men's tennis.
