MADISON, WI - The Forester men’s tennis team placed seventh at the Midwest Conference Tournament over the weekend (April 30-May 1). The top four places were decided by Friday’s (April 29) team tournament, where Grinnell College defeated Ripon College in the championship match and St. Norbert College knocked off Knox College for third place. Monmouth College (42 points) and Lawrence University (33) finished just ahead of Lake Forest (20) and Beloit College (16), Carroll College (15), and Illinois College (12) rounded out the field.

Sophomore Alex Godin (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North), at number three, was the Foresters’ only singles player to win his first individual match on Saturday. He defeated his Illinois College counterpart 6-3, 6-2 in round one before falling in the quarterfinals.

In the consolation bracket, freshmen Dan Otto (Austin, TX/St. Stephens) and Brayton Groth (Bloomfield Hill, MI/Cranbrook Kingswood) each recorded at least one victory at numbers five and six, respectively. Otto won 10-6 in the semifinals and 10-8 to claim the consolation championship. Groth prevailed 10-6 in the semifinals before falling in the finals.

Lake Forest found a little more success in doubles play on Sunday. Juniors Rob Burda (Meridian, ID/Meridian) and Sebastian Bienia (Lemont, IL/Lemont) defeated the number two team from Illinois College 6-0, 6-1 and the duo from Ripon 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 before finally being eliminated in the semifinals by Monmouth 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Otto and Groth also advanced to the semifinals at number three with a 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Lawrence in round one and a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Monmouth in the quarterfinals.

The Foresters finished the 2005 season with a 5-9 overall dual match record and a 1-3 mark in MWC South Division play. The team will lose just one of its members, number one singles player Alex Pukshansky (Buffalo Grove, IL/Stevenson), to graduation.
