FORESTERS READY FOR CHALLENGE OF MWC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Lake Forest men's tennis team will bring their 14-match winning streak
into the Midwest Conference Championships this weekend (May 5-7) in Madison,
WI. The Foresters are 16-4 overall and have lost just one match to an NCAA
Division III opponent.
The defending champion Foresters will compete as the MWC South Division's
top seed after posting a perfect 3-0 mark this season.
Ripon, St. Norbert, and Grinnell round out the tournament field for
Friday's MWC Team Championship. The mini-tournament, scheduled to start
at 8 a.m. at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, will determine the top
four placings in final MWC standings.
North Champion Ripon (4-0, 16-4) will open against South runner-up
Grinnell (2-1, 14-9). Lake Forest (3-0, 16-4) will open against North runner-up
St. Norbert (3-1, 3-8).
MWC Men's Tennis Championship action will continue Saturday and Sunday
with all nine competing schools engaging in flighted competition to determine
singles and doubles championships. Points amassed during flighted competition
will be used to determine places five through nine in final 2000 standings.
Seniors Dave
Kelly and Guerin
Williams will defend their conference singles championships. Kelly
has won the past two titles at No. 1 singles and will compete in the top
flight again this year. Williams won last year's title at No. 6 singles
and will play from the No. 5 slot this year.
Lake Forest also won all three doubles tournaments in 1999.
Lawrence is the designated host for the three-day competition.
