MADISON, Wis. - The Forester men's tennis team placed fifth at the Midwest Conference Championships over the weekend (May 1-3). Grinnell College claimed its sixth consecutive title in Friday's team tournament with a victory over Monmouth College. Lawrence University defeated St. Norbert College in the third-place match. Lake Forest scored more points in Saturday's singles and Sunday's doubles tournaments than any of the other five teams in the league to claim fifth place overall.

Junior Joe Campagna (Elmwood Park, Ill./Fenwick) was the only Forester to find success in the winners bracket of Saturday's singles competition. He won 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals at #4 before falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in the semifinals.

Although the other five Lake Forest players lost their first match, three went on to claim consolation titles and another fell in the consolation final. Junior Alex Presman (Deerfield, Ill/Deerfield) won his consolation semifinal match 10-5 and consolation final 10-6 at #1. Senior Andrew Fretter (Bloomfield, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) triumphed 10-0 and 10-2 in the #3 consolation bracket, giving him 100 career victories in singles and doubles play combined. Sophomore Chris Paterakos (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) prevailed 10-0 and 10-5 at #5. Freshman Tommy White (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) and senior Ricky Galvez (Poolville, N.Y./Hamilton Central) were last-minute replacements at #2 and #6, respectively, and Galvez won his consolation semifinal 10-6 before falling 10-2 in the consolation final.

Campagna and Paterakos were the #3 seed at #3 doubles. After winning 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals, the duo upset the top seeded team from Grinnell 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. It was the only tournament on the weekend that a Grinnell individual or doubles team did not win.

Presman and freshman Jason Wiznitzer (Northbrook, Ill./Chicagoland Jewish) recorded the team's only other doubles points on a grueling 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7) victory in the first round at #1.

Fretter, Galvez, and Rocky Tektumanidze (Riverwoods, Ill./Deerfield), who has been hurt for nearly the entire season, are the only three players on the team that will graduate next weekend.
