2000 Season Preview:
"Foresters Seek to Build on '99 Conference Championship"
The 1999 Lake Forest men’s tennis team finished the season with a top 40 national ranking (the first such ranking in school history) and won the school’s first Midwest Conference Championship since 1978.  But, Head Coach Chad Eisele, with a conference title under his belt in just his second season, has no intentions of waiting through another 21-year drought.  “We want to continue with this success and compete for a conference championship year in and year out,” Eisele commented.  “With the expanded post season for the national playoffs, our goal for the year 2000 is not only to compete on the conference level, but on the national level as well.”
The Foresters return five of the six competitors who won two singles and all three doubles titles at the 1999 MWC Championships.  Additionally, those five are seniors this season, all of which have been mainstays in the Forester’s lineup since arriving on campus.  Last year, all of the returnees advanced to the finals of their singles bracket at the conference tournament and were the backbone of a team that finished 15-4 in dual matches, including winning 9 of their final 10 matches.  Two of their four losses came at the hands of NCAA Division I opponents.
Senior co-captain Dave Kelly has held down the No. 1 singles position for the Foresters since his freshman year.  Kelly has compiled a 43-10 career record, including back-to-back MWC titles in 1998 and 1999.  He finished last season as the 19th ranked individual in the Midwest region.  Kelly added his first doubles title last year at No. 2.  Senior Shane Bell has flanked Kelly from his No. 2 singles position for their entire college career.  Bell has a 43-11 career record.  With Kelly and Bell at the top of the lineup, the Foresters are not only experienced, but talented, according to Coach Eisele, “Dave and Shane have been very solid players who compete at an extremely high level.  Win or lose, they give great effort and come out on top more often than not.”
Also returning is Guerin Williams, a senior co-captain in 2000 who has spent one season at No. 5 and two at No. 6 singles for Lake Forest.  Williams finished last season with a 22-2 overall record, MWC titles at No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles, and a 19-match winning streak.  “Guerin is a tremendous competitor who uses his athleticism to win matches,” added Coach Eisele.
Ray Ro, a Forester mainstay at No. 4 singles since his freshman season, compiled a 15-3 overall singles record last year and has won two conference titles (No. 4 singles in 1998 and No. 3 doubles in 1999).  Fellow senior Courtney Barr finished his first season at LFC with a 16-7 record and as the conference runner-up at No. 5 singles, as well as a conference championship at No. 1 doubles, after transferring into Lake Forest.
A talented group of newcomers will give the Foresters additional depth and look to crack Coach Eisele’s top six.
The Foresters’ 2000 schedule will again include competition from all levels, including NCAA Division I, II, and the some of the finest DIII schools in the nation.  Lake Forest’s annual spring break trip makes its’ stop in Hawaii this season.  “Part of building a tradition is playing top competition, and our schedule will once again challenge our team,” Coach Eisele added.  “We want to build on last year’s success and create a strong tradition here at Lake Forest College.”
