Ruth "Jamie" Hayes-Arista '82
Ruth “Jamie” Hayes grew up in Seattle, Washington, and graduated from Lakeside School in 1978. She competed in cross country and track in high school and placed second in the mile run at the state meet. She was also extremely successful in competitive horse riding.

Hayes entered Lake Forest in the fall of 1978 and was a three-sport athlete at the College. She was an outfielder on the softball team in its first two years with varsity status. She was also a forward on the field hockey team her final three years, earning team Most Improved Player honors as a sophomore and serving as a team captain as a senior. Her most successful sport, however, was swimming. Hayes was named the team’s Most Improved Performer after competing at the national meet in the mile as a sophomore, and she returned as part of the 12th-place 200-medley relay team the following year. As a senior she captained the team to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships and placed sixth in the nation in the 50-breaststroke, 11th in the 50-breaststroke, and 12th in the 200-breaststroke. She was also a member of the ninth-place 200-medley and 11th-place 400-medley relay teams and was named the squad’s Most Valuable Performer after the season.

After earning a degree from the College in Economics and Local and Regional Studies, Hayes moved to San Antonio to train at the National Training Center for the Modern Pentathlon. She was a member of the United States National Team in that sport for three years, won the U.S. National title and Canadian Nationals in 1983, and placed ninth at the World Championships in 1984.

Hayes lists building a relationship with David, her husband and ownership partner of a retail wine shop, as her greatest lifetime achievement.
