Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Bob attended South Shore High School.  He was a member of  the city of Chicago championship basketball team in 1947 and was selected All-City his junior and senior years.

Entering Lake Forest College in 1948, he earned four varsity letters in basketball.  He led the team in scoring all four years and was selected All-Conference three times.  A leader off the field, Bob also served as the senior class vice president, secretary of Phi Delta Theta, and was a member of the Lettermen's Club and the Intramural Board of Control.

Graduating with a biology degree, Bob entered the U.S. Navy and served two years before embarking on a coaching career that spanned three decades.  In 1955, after receiving a Masters degree in Physical Education from Montana State University, he accepted a basketball coaching position at Aurora College, IL.  In 1957 he joined the basketball staff at Waukegan Township High School, coaching the freshman and sophomore levels until 1971, when he was appointed varsity head coach.  For the next six years the Waukegan teams enjoyed tremendous success, reaching the finals of the 1975 Illinois State Basketball Championship.  In 1977 he stepped down from his coaching duties but continued to teach physical education until his retirement in 1986.
