As a freshman she was a member of a pair of Honorable Mention All-American relay teams that placed 12 th and 15 th in the nation. The following year she swam on medley relay teams that placed ninth and 11th at the national meet and, on her own, she finished sixth in the 50-butterfly and 10th in the 100-butterfly. The medley relays each placed among the top seven in the country her junior season and she was the Foresters' Most Valuable Swimmer. She was also a team captain as a junior and senior, when she finished off her career on the 200-freestyle relay team that placed 11th in the nation. Lake Forest was 38-4 in dual meets during Leonard's four seasons and its ninth-place national team placing in 1983 is, at the time of her induction, the highest in the program's history. She also helped the team win its first conference championship in 1984.

Leonard went on to earn an MBA in marketing from the Keller Graduate School of Management.

She has been heavily involved with and received numerous distinguished awards from the Girl Scouts of America. In addition, her efforts as a school board member helped institute an extremely successful fundraising program. She has also accomplished great feats as the Membership Programs Department manager for Lions Clubs International.

She lists raising her three children and preparing them for college and beyond among her greatest lifetime accomplishments.
