Pair of Conference Doubleheaders on the Road After throwing a no-hitter on Tuesday (April 6), senior Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield) surrendered three runs (two earned) and six base hits to the Lady Blues in Friday’s game one victory. She struck out three batters and did not issue a base on balls. Juniors Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township) and Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) and freshman Mackenzie Knowling (Lafayette, IN/McCutcheon) each had a pair of base hits in the game. Junior Justeen Streich (Arlington Heights, IL/Hersey) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two more driven in. All four players had a hit in the Foresters’ five-run third inning. The visitors tallied two more in the fourth inning and one in the sixth. Illinois College also plated two in the fourth and added one in the fifth. Sophomore Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) struck out eight batters and scattered eight hits over eight innings to record the victory in game two. Feeney was 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a game-winning two-run double in the bottom of the eighth. The opener at Monmouth was called after five innings. The only Fighting Scot to reach base against Furgerson did so with a one-out single in the fifth. The team’s co-captain matched a season-high with seven strikeouts in her third shutout of the year. She is now 8-2 on the season with a 1.23 earned run average. Feeney and freshman Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park) were each 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored and junior Hannah Starck (Aurora, IL/Aurora West) was 2-for-2. The Foresters scored two runs in the first inning and six in the third. Watts was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI in game two. Feeney, Streich, sophomore Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech), and freshman Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, IL/Normal) were each 2-for-4. After Monmouth scored one in the top of the third inning, Lake Forest responded with four in the its half of the frame. The Scots regained the lead with four in the fourth but the Foresters bounced back again with three in the bottom half of the inning. Closson struck out eight and allowed just one earned run in her third straight victory. She was also 1-for-3 at the plate to extend her hitting streak to eight games. Lake Forest will travel to Aurora University Wednesday (April 14) for
a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader. The team will take on the five members of
the conference’s North Division next weekend (April 17-18) at
the MWC Classic in Janesville, Wisconsin.
