Team wins twice at Illinois College, splits at Monmouth

Kendra Grant is 4-1 with a 2.19 earned run average on the year.
MONMOUTH, IL - The Forester softball team won three of four games over the weekend (March 31-April 1) to start the Midwest Conference portion of its schedule. The team recorded 7-0 and 6-2 victories at Illinois College on Friday. Lake Forest also won Saturday’s opener 8-6 before falling 7-1 to Monmouth College in game two. The Foresters are now 9-8 overall this season.

Sophomore Kendra Grant (Bothell, WA/Bothell) struck out four batters and surrendered just four base hits in Friday’s opener. It was her second shutout of the year and third of her career.

Junior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) batted 3-for-4 in the game with a double and three runs batted in. Classmate Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park) was 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two driven in. Senior Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) also had a pair of base hits in the contest. The Foresters scored one in each of the first two innings, two in the third and fifth, and one more in the top of the seventh.

Closson was in the pitcher’s circle for game two and gave up two runs on six hits while striking out six.

Watts and senior Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) were each 2-for-4 in the game and junior Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, IL/Normal) drove in a pair of runs. The Lady Blues scored in the top of the first inning but the Foresters responded with one in the second and three in the third. The home team scored one more in the fifth and Lake Forest got two in the sixth.

Watts belted her second home run of the season and 11th of her career in Saturday’s opener. She raised her team-leading RBI total to 23. The Foresters trailed 6-2 after a five-run fifth inning by Monmouth. However, a grand slam by Wegner capped off a six-run sixth inning and accounted for the final score.

Grant raised her record on the year to 4-1 and did not walk a batter for the second game in a row. It was the 100th collegiate victory for Lake Forest head coach Tina Johnson.

The Forester bats finally went cold in game two. Sophomore Rachael Pasdo (Hoffman Estates, IL/William Fremd), who pitched two-and-two-thirds scoreless innings of relief, was 2-for-2 at the plate. Jeziorny doubled and scored the visitors’ only run on a groundout in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Fighting Scots had scored one run in the first inning and three in both the fourth and fifth.

Lake Forest is scheduled to host one game against Wheaton College at 4:30 Wednesday (April 5) afternoon before traveling to Janesville, Wisconsin, for the MWC Classic next weekend (April 8-9).
