Furgerson Sets Record for Wins, Foresters Go 4-1 at the MWC Classic
Junior has 29 career victories

Leigh Anne Furgerson has won more games in her career than any other Forester.
JANESVILLE, WI - The Forester softball team took on all five Midwest Conference North Division schools this weekend (April 12-13) at the annual MWC Classic and came away with four victories. Lake Forest shut out Ripon College 5-0 and fell to St. Norbert College 2-1 Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, the Foresters blanked Beloit College 5-0 and Carroll College 7-0 before edging out Lawrence University 9-8 in nine innings.

Fellow South Division foe Grinnell College went 5-0 on the weekend. Lake Forest joined St. Norbert and Monmouth College with 4-1 marks. Knox College won three times and Lawrence twice. Beloit, Carroll, and Ripon collected one win each while Illinois College was 0-5.

In the 5-0 victory over Ripon, junior Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield) shut out the Red Hawks for six innings, allowing just three hits while striking out two. Freshman Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) finished things up with a perfect seventh.

Offensively, sophomore second baseman Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago), senior first baseman Shanon Joselane (Glendale Heights, IL/Glenbard East), and sophomore catcher Justeen Streich (Arlington Heights, IL/Hersey) each had a pair of base hits. The Foresters scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning and added three more in the seventh.

In the 2-1 loss to St. Norbert, Lake Forest started the scoring in the bottom of the first when Mildebrath tripled in sophomore left fielder Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township). The Green Knights plated one in the top of the sixth inning and scored the game winner in the seventh. The Foresters were out-hit 8-5.

Closson got the team off to a good start on Sunday with her first career shutout, a 5-0 two-hitter against Beloit College.  She did not strike out nor walk a single batter while earning her second victory of the year without a loss. She has yet to allow an earned run in six appearances and 15 innings this season.

The Foresters scored three times in the top of the second inning and once in both the third and fourth. Freshman third baseman Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) and sophomore shortstop Tina Koludrovic (Darien, IL/Downers Grove South) each tallied three base hits while Mildebrath and Feeney added two apiece.

Furgerson got her second victory of the weekend in the 7-0 shutout of Carroll. In four innings she allowed just one base hit and walked one while striking out three. Sophomore Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/ Barneveld) also surrendered just a hit and a walk in the final three innings to earn her first career save.

Feeney and Koludrovic each had two base hits and scored twice. Streich also scored two runs while both Koludrovic and senior third baseman Robyn Slater (Granite City, IL/Granite City) drove in two. Lake Forest scored one in the top of the first, four in the second, and once in both the fifth and sixth innings.

The fifth and final game of the weekend, a 9-8 nine-inning victory over Lawrence, was by far the most exciting. After the Vikings scored five times in the top of the first, the Foresters responded with three in the bottom half of the frame, including two on a triple by Slater. Lawrence scored one more in the second to take a 6-3 advantage.

Mildebrath had an RBI-triple and later scored in a two-run third inning. Lake Forest tied the game in the fifth on a base hit by Joselane and took a 7-6 lead on another by Koludrovic in the sixth.

Lawrence scored once in the seventh to tie the game and drove in the runner placed on second at the start of the ninth to take an 8-7 lead. Koludrovic was placed at second to start the bottom half of the ninth and Slater's third base hit of the game moved her to third. After Mildebrath was intentionally walked to load the bases, senior designated player Megan Gibson's (Brown Deer, WI/Brown Deer) game-winning two-run single gave her a career-high three RBI in the contest.

Furgerson came on to start the fourth inning and went the rest of the way to earn her third victory of the weekend and school-record 29th of her career. She allowed six base hits and just two runs (one earned) while striking out three. In two-and-a-half seasons, she has a 29-15 career record and a 1.42 ERA.

Mildebrath led the team with a .500 average (9-for-18) for the weekend and tied with Slater and Gibson for the team lead with five RBI. Feeney scored at least once in each game and led the squad with seven. Forester pitchers allowed 10 runs but only three were earned, giving the team a 0.57 ERA on the weekend and a 0.70 mark for the season.

Lake Forest will play at home three day in a row this week. A doubleheader against Monmouth College on Thursday (April 17) is sandwiched between non-conference twinbills against Carthage College on Wednesday (April 16) and Aurora University on Friday (April 18).
