Foresters prevail 4-2 and 6-2

Melissa Wegner scored for the
100th time in her career.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Forester softball team hosted and defeated North Central College twice on Thursday (April 13), taking the opener 4-2 and game two 6-2. Lake Forest is now 14-10 on the season while the Cardinals fell to 17-9.

The Foresters scored all of their game one runs in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg), who was 2-for-3 in the contest, led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Christy Condon (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) then tripled down the right field line and scored on a single by freshman Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, IL/ Grayslake). Michal stole second and scored on a double by senior Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech), who in turn scored on a single by freshman Anna Risi (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park).

North Central plated an unearned run in the top of the third inning off freshman Jen Mattern (Peoria, IL/Richwoods), who threw five innings and raised her record on the year to 3-0. She also owns a 1.67 earned run average. Sophomore Rachael Pasdo (Hoffman Estates, IL/William Fremd) allowed a run in the sixth but held off any further damage for her first career save.

The Cardinals scored in the top of game two’s first inning but the home team responded with four in the bottom of the frame. Wegner led off with a home run and scored her 100th career run. She is just the third player in team history to reach that mark and needs 10 more to tie the school record. Condon drove in another run with a double and she and junior Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, IL/Normal), who had singled one batter earlier, both scored on a single by sophomore Erin Ruberg (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas).

The Foresters tacked on one more in the second when junior Kim Silvers (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) scored on an RBI groundout by classmate Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park).

Both teams scored once in the sixth inning. Senior Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) led off the bottom of the frame with a single and Michal replaced her as a pinch-runner. Pasdo then drove in Michael with a double to left center field.

Sophomore Kendra Grant (Bothell, WA/Bothell) pitched the entire game and raised her record on the year to 6-2. She scattered seven base hits in the contest and did not walk a batter.

Lake Forest will continue Midwest Conference play on Saturday (April 15) with a doubleheader at home against Grinnell College. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
