JANESVILLE, Wis. - The Forester softball team defeated Beloit College 6-3 late Monday afternoon (April 14) after falling 12-10 in eight innings to Ripon College and 8-0 in five innings to St. Norbert College earlier in the day. The weekend’s Midwest Conference Classic was postponed and then canceled due to weather. The event’s day one schedule was played out on Monday as non-conference games.

The Foresters took the early lead against Ripon with four first inning runs. Junior Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) doubled to lead off the frame. Sophomore Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton) reached on a bunt single and came all the way around to score when the Red Hawks committed a pair of errors on the play. Sophomore Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) walked, classmate Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) doubled, and both scored on ground balls.

Ripon responded with four in the top of the second but Lake Forest regained the lead with two in the bottom of the inning. Senior Erin Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) led off with a walk and Michal singled. The runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Pinsonneault and scored on a misplayed ground ball and a double steal, despite the trail runner being thrown out at second base.

After surrendering a run in the third, the Foresters plated four in the fourth. Freshman Gretchen Galasek (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) and Ruberg singled and Michal beat out a bunt for her third hit of the game. Galasek scored and Rainey reached on an error by the right fielder, two more scored as back-to-back batters were hit by pitches, and a groundout drove in the fourth run of the inning.

Ripon tied the game at 10 with a five-run fifth and won it with two in the eighth.

An eight-run second inning accounted for all the runs in the loss to St. Norbert. Galasek retired 11 of 12 batters in relief and Lake Forest had as many baserunners as the Green Knights. Forester freshman Nicole Moser (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) was 2-for-2 with a walk in the contest.

Michal singled to lead off the game against Beloit. Moser then reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second on a groundout, and scored on a single by senior Christy Condon (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East). The Foresters doubled their lead when sophomore Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci) hit her team-high seventh home run of the year in the second inning. Moser singled to lead off the third, Rainey walked, and Condon belted her sixth homer of the year to extend the lead to 5-0. Moser walked in the sixth, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored for the third time in the game by a Condon base hit.

Beloit scored once in the bottom of the sixth and twice in the seventh off senior Kendra Grant (Bothell, Wash./Bothell), who threw all seven innings and raised her record on the year to 5-5.

Lake Forest is 11-8 on the season and will host Robert Morris College Friday (April 18) at 4:30 p.m. The Foresters will then play a doubleheader against visiting Knox College the following afternoon at 1:00.
