Christy Condon's nine home
runs are a new school record.
LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College softball team swept a doubleheader at home with Grinnell College on Saturday (April 15). The Foresters won the opener 6-4 and game two 11-5 and are now 16-10 overall this season and atop the Midwest Conference South Division standings with an 8-3 league record. The Pioneers fell to 14-9 overall and 5-4 in the conference.

The visitors jumped out to an early lead in game one with three runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) put the Foresters on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the second but Grinnell scored one more in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

Lake Forest’s comeback began in earnest in the bottom of the fifth inning and was completed in the sixth. Junior Kim Silvers (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) singled with two outs and senior Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) belted her third home run of the year to make the score 4-3 after five. Junior Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park) singled to lead off the sixth and a home run by sophomore Christy Condon (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) turned the one-run deficit into a lead of the same size. Senior Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) walked with two outs and, after advancing to third on a single by sophomore Rachael Pasdo (Hoffman Estates, IL/William Fremd), scored on some creative and aggressive baserunning by both players.

Sophomore Kendra Grant (Bothell, WA/Bothell) pitched all seven innings and allowed just four base hits. She is now 7-2 on the season with a 2.18 earned run average.

In game two, Lake Forest scored six runs in the top of the second inning and four more in the third. Grinnell plated three in the bottom of the third, both teams scored once in the sixth, and the visitors added one more run in the seventh off Closson, who gave up just five hits in the complete game victory. She evened her record on the year at 5-5 and since none of the runs were earned, lowered her ERA to 3.85.

Condon was 4-for-4 in the contest with two more home runs, giving her a school record nine round-trippers this season. Her 10 total bases in the game are also a new program best. Wegner was 3-for-4 and raised her team-leading batting average to .466. Sophomore Erin Ruberg (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three driven in.

Lake Forest will play at the University of Chicago Wednesday (April 19) afternoon at 3:00 and will host Knox College next Saturday (April 22) at 1:00 p.m.
