JANESVILLE, Wis. - The Forester softball team won four of five games at the 2007 Midwest Conference Classic over the weekend (April 15-16). The event was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday but was delayed a day due to weather and field condition issues. On Sunday, Lake Forest defeated Ripon College 8-0 in six innings, fell 8-7 to St. Norbert College, and out-slugged Lawrence University 17-9 in five innings. The Foresters began Monday with another 8-0 five-inning triumph over Beloit College and finished the event with a 5-2 victory over Carroll College. The team is now 11-10 overall and 6-1 in league play this season.

Freshman Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) tossed her first career shutout in the blanking of Ripon. She allowed just four hits, struck out four, and walked four in the contest. Junior Christy Condon (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) and freshmen Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) and Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) each had a pair of base hits. Sophomore Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) scored two of the team’s eight runs and, along with senior Kim Silvers (Walton, Ind./Lewis Cass) and freshman Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton), stole two bases.

Lake Forest broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fourth inning and added two in both the fifth and sixth.

Every spot in the order produced at least one base hit in the loss to St. Norbert and freshman Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) had two, including her third home run of the season. Condon also cleared the fance for the Foresters with her fourth home run of the year and school record 16th of her career. Silvers and Neill scored two runs apiece and Neill and senior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) each drove in two.

The Foresters took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning but the Green Knights pulled away with two in the second and four in the third. After Lake Forest plated one in the fourth, St. Norbert added two in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead. Four runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh pulled the Foresters to within a run before the team ran out of chances.

Rainey, Condon, Neill, Norton, senior Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, Ill./Normal), and freshman Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci) each had two of the squad’s 16 hits against Lawrence as the Foresters matched their highest run production (17) of the season. Condon belted her fifth home run of the year and Norton her second. Rainey and Pfund scored three times each and three others crossed home plate twice. Rainey, Riddle, and Norton had three RBI apiece and Condon drove in four.

Lawrence owned a 3-2 advantage after the first inning but the Foresters scored six times in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good. The Vikings scored once and Lake Forest three times in the third. The teams traded five-run frames in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth and the Foresters scored the game-ending run with no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Kendra Grant (Bothell, Wash./Bothell) pitched the entire game and earned the victory for Lake Forest.

Michal had a pair of base hits and scored twice against Beloit and Norton belted a three-run home run, her third round-tripper of the season. Grant blanked the Buccaneers on five base hits and she struck out a pair. She has won her last five decisions and is now 5-4 this year and 27-13 with seven shutouts in her career.

The game was scoreless until Lake Forest scored seven times in the bottom of the third inning. One more run in the fourth provided the Foresters with the eight-run lead needed to end the game after five innings.

Andresen surrendered just three base hits against Carroll and raised her record to 6-4. She also matched a season-high with seven strikeouts. Neill had three of the Foresters’ 14 base hits and Condon and Norton each had two. Condon also scored twice and senior Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, Ill./Evergreen Park) drove in a pair to become the program’s all-time leader with 102 RBI in her career.

Led by Norton (.571) and Neill (.562), Lake Forest batted .400 on the weekend. Condon batted .471, tied Neill with a team-high seven runs scored and matched Norton’s team-leading eight RBI. Norton, Neill, Condon, Pfund, and Michal each had at least one base hit in all five games.
