April 18, 2003 Contact: Mike Wajerski, SID Gilbert and Slater Homer in Doubleheader Split With
Aurora
Game one was scoreless until the home team exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior right fielder Carly Gilbert (Berthound, CO/Westminster) led off with a double and hit a grand slam, her first career home run, later in the inning. Senior third baseman Robyn Slater (Granite City, IL/Granite City) also had two base hits in the inning, including a three-run homer, the school-record 11th of her career. She had been tied for the career record with sophomore Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) and 2002 graduate Jenn Reifenberg. Sophomore catcher Justeen Streich (Arlington Heights, IL/Hersey) had a double, single, two runs scored, and two RBI in the inning. After Aurora scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth, Lake Forest plated one more in the bottom of the frame. Senior second baseman Megan Gibson (Brown Deer, WI/Brown Deer) led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI-single by sophomore outfielder Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township). Sophomore Tina Koludrovic (Darien, IL/Downers Grove South) was 1-for-3 in the contest, extending her hitting streak to 14 consecutive games. Freshman Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) pitched all five innings for Lake Forest to improve her record on the year to 3-0. She allowed just two base hits and struck out nine. In game two, the Foresters took the early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman shortstop Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) led off with a single and later scored on Slater's sacrifice fly. Streich advanced to third on the play and scored on senior first baseman Shanon Joselane's (Glendale Heights, IL/Glenbard East) RBI-groundout. Mildebrath also singled in the inning and has at least one base hit in 13 straight games. Through six innings, sophomore Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) had allowed just one run on three hits and had struck out four. However, the Spartans rallied for six runs in the final frame to steal the win. An RBI-single by Slater scored Closson in the bottom of the seventh, but the Foresters were unable to complete the comeback. Lake Forest will play four doubleheaders next week, beginning with the University of Chicago at home on Tuesday (April 22) at 3:00 p.m. The team will also host Illinois College on Thursday (April 24) and will play at Grinnell College on Friday (April 25) and Knox College on Saturday (April 25).
