Foresters Win Three of Five at MWC Classic
Mildebrath bats .500 on the weekend

Alissa Mildebrath was 8-for-16 on the busy weekend.
JANESVILLE, WI - The Lake Forest College softball team came away from the Midwest Conference Classic over the weekend (April 17-18) with three victories and a pair of defeats against the league’s five North Division teams. After falling 2-0 to St. Norbert College and 3-1 to Beloit College on Saturday, the Foresters finished the day with a 4-1 triumph over Carroll College. Lawrence University and Ripon College were each 3-0 on Saturday but Lake Forest defeated them 4-0 and 5-1, respectively, on Sunday. The Foresters are now 21-9 overall and 9-2 in MWC games this year and in first place in the South.

Freshman Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park) and juniors Justeen Streich (Arlington Heights, IL/Hersey) and Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) accounted for Lake Forest’s only three base hits against St. Norbert. The Green Knights plated one run in the top of the third inning and another in the sixth off of senior Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield), who took the loss despite surrendering just one earned run.

Sophomore Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) had two of the Foresters’ five base hits against Beloit. Mildebrath led off the game with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Wegner, and scored on an RBI groundout by Watts. Beloit tied the score in the bottom of the second inning and scored its other two runs in the third. Sophomore Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) struck out eight Buccaneers and allowed two earned runs in the loss.

Furgerson notched her 10th victory of the season in the team’s win over Carroll. She allowed just four base hits, struck out six Pioneers, and issued two bases on balls. Mildebrath walked to lead off the bottom of the first and later scored on an error. After Carroll tied the score in the second, a third-inning double by Watts drove in Streich and freshman Kim Silvers (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass), who started the rally with a leadoff single. Silvers repeated that feat in the fifth and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Watts.

Junior Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township) doubled in Mildebrath in the top of the first inning of the victory over Lawrence. The team scored two more runs in the third. Junior Hannah Starck (Aurora, IL/Aurora West) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Mildebrath followed Starck’s single with one of her own and was eventually driven in by a Watts single. An RBI single by freshman Kristen Proffitt (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) plated Feeney with an insurance run in the sixth. Closson scattered five hits in her second shutout of the year.

Furgerson threw a three-hitter and allowed just an unearned run against Ripon to close out the weekend. She leads the team with an 11-3 record, 59 strikeouts, and a sparkling 1.18 ERA. Mildebrath was 3-for-3 from her leadoff spot in the lineup. She and Streich each scored in both the first and third innings. Feeney had an RBI double and also scored in the fifth and Closson drove in two runs in the game.

The Foresters will travel to the University of Chicago on Thursday (April 22) for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader before closing out the regular season with two home games against Knox College on Saturday (April 24).
