Mattern Shuts Out Chicago in Opener, Maroons Win Game Two
Melissa Wegner hits fourth home run of the season

CHICAGO, IL - The Forester softball team split a doubleheader at the University of Chicago on Wednesday (April 19), shutting out the Maroons 1-0 in the opener and falling 4-1 in game two. The Foresters are now 17-11 this season and Chicago’s record is 14-10.

Freshman Jen Mattern (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) blanked the home team in game one and limited the Maroons to just three base hits. She is now 4-0 on the season with a 1.25 earned run average.

The only run of the game was scored in the top of the first inning. Senior Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) led off the frame with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by junior Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park). Watts now has 30 runs batted in this season and trails the single-season school record she set last year by just four.

Wegner also plated the visitors’ only run of the second game when hit the first pitch of the contest over the left field fence. It was her fourth round-tripper of the season. She has now scored 104 times in her career and is just six shy of matching the school record.

Lake Forest will resume Midwest Conference play at home on Saturday (April 22) against Knox College. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
