LAKE FOREST, IL - The Lake Forest College softball team defeated Knox College 12-4 in the opener of Saturday’s (April 22) doubleheader and 12-3 in game two. Both contests lasted just six innings. The Foresters raised their overall record on the year to 19-11 and completed the Midwest Conference portion of their schedule with a mark of 11-3. The Prairie Fire fell to 2-25 overall and 0-11 in the league.

Senior Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) and junior Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park) were each 3-for-4 in game one. Wegner doubled and belted her fifth home run of the season, Watts hit her third round-tripper of the year, and the two combined to score seven runs and drive in five. Junior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) and sophomore Christy Condon (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) were each 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in.

Watts’ homer gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and the Foresters added five in the third, two in the fourth, and four more in the sixth to end the game. Knox was hitless against sophomore Kendra Grant (Bothell, WA/Bothell) until the fourth and scored twice in both that inning and the next. Two of the runs were unearned and Grant is now 8-2 on the year with a 2.30 ERA.

Jeziorny was 2-for-4 in the second game with a pair of two-run homers. She is the second Forester this season (Condon) and the fifth in team history to belt two home runs in a single contest. Watts also had two base hits in the game, Condon scored and drove in two runs, and senior Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) and junior Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, IL/Normal) both crossed home plate three times.

Lake Forest scored six runs in the top of the first inning and, after giving up a pair in the bottom of the frame, added two in the third and fourth. Knox scored one in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game but could not match the Foresters’ two runs in the sixth.

Closson struck out four in the contest and has 67 this season. She raised her record on the year to 6-5.

The first-place team in the MWC South Division standings at the end of the year will host the conference championship tournament. The Foresters currently hold that spot and can clinch the divisional crown if Monmouth College loses any of its six league games next week.

Lake Forest will host a single game against Wheaton College at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday (April 25) and will play a doubleheader at Carthage College Thursday (April 27) afternoon at 3:00.
