Melissa Wegner was 7-for-14 on the weekend with a triple, homer, 5 runs scored and 8 RBI.
GALESBURG, IL - The Forester softball team won four Midwest Conference South Division road games over the weekend (April 23-24) to clinch a berth in the 2005 MWC Championship Tournament. Lake Forest won 4-3 and 13-1 (5 innings) at Grinnell College on Saturday and 8-5 and 9-3 at Knox College on Sunday. The Foresters are now 20-13-1 overall on the year and finished league play 9-4.

Every batter in the Lake Forest lineup had at least one base hit in the opener at Grinnell and sophomore Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park), the team’s leading hitter on the year with a .412 average, was 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base. Senior Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) scored two runs and sophomore Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, IL/Normal) drove in three. Freshman Kendra Grant (Bothell, WA/Bothell) pitched all seven innings to earn the victory.

The Foresters scored one run in the top of the first and, after Grinnell tied the game in the fourth, regained the lead with one in the fifth. The visitors scored two more in the top of the seventh and, after scoring a pair in the bottom of the frame, Grinnell stranded the tying run at second.

Junior Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI in game two. She also excelled as a pitcher, surrendering just one unearned run on four base hits while striking out two and walking one in the five-inning contest. Sophomore Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two more driven in and junior Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of RBI.

Lake Forest scored once in the bottom of the second inning and six times in both the third and fourth. Grinnell’s only tally came in the top of the fourth.

Wegner was 2-for-4 with a triple, home run, two runs scored and career-high six RBI in game one at Knox. Grant again earned the victory to raise her record on the year to 7-3.

The Foresters scored twice in the top of the first and fourth innings. Knox plated one in the bottom of the first and three in the fifth before Wegner broke the 4-4 tie with a grand slam in the sixth.

Freshman Jessica Kirincich (Channahon, IL/Minooka) was 4-for-5 with three RBI in game two. Classmate Christy Condon (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) was 3-for-4 and both Wegner and Jeziorny added a pair of base hits. Closson allowed just one earned run and is now 9-5 on the season.

Knox led after scoring twice in the top of the second but a five-run Forester rally in the fourth gave the visitors the edge and two more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings clinched the victory.

After taking next weekend off, Lake Forest will compete in the MWC Tournament on May 6-7.
