LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Lake Forest College softball team swept a doubleheader at home against Illinois College on Saturday (April 7), defeating the Lady Blues 8-4 in the opener and 17-10 in game two. The Foresters are now 7-9 overall this season and Illinois College fell to 10-9. The games were the first Midwest Conference contests for both teams.

Senior rightfielder Kim Silvers (Walton, Ind./Lewis Cass), freshman shortstop Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park), and senior catcher Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) each had a pair of base hits in game one. Junior Christy Condon (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) belted a home run, her third round-tripper of the season and school record-tying 15th of her career. Silvers, who doubled and tripled in the game, and Condon each scored a pair of runs and Rainey and Condon drove in three apiece. Junior Kendra Grant (Bothell, Wash./Bothell) earned the victory, the 25th of her career.

Condon’s three-run home run gave the home team a 3-0 lead after one inning and the Foresters scored one more in the fourth. Illinois College plated two in the fifth and sixth, but Lake Forest matched that run production in both innings.

While many players on both teams posted impressive numbers in game two, none were close to matching Forester freshman catcher Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian), who was 5-for-5 with three doubles, a grand slam, two runs scored and a school record nine driven in. Her 11 total bases are also a team record and she matched the single-game marks for base hits and doubles. Freshman third baseman Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Rainey, Condon, and sophomore centerfielder Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake) each had a pair of base hits. Condon scored four runs and Rainey three. Michal doubled and hit her first career home run.

Lake Forest scored once in the top of the first inning but surrendered three runs in the bottom of the frame. The Foresters plated seven runs in the second frame, including four on Neill’s two-out grand slam. After adding three in the third and one in the fourth, the home team held a commanding 12-3 lead. Illinois College, however, battled back with a seven-run fourth to cut the deficit to just two runs. Lake Forest pulled away with a run in the fifth inning and four more in the seventh.

The Foresters will play a doubleheader at North Central College Thursday (April 12) afternoon at 3:00 before competing in the MWC Classic next weekend (April 14-15). Lake Forest will take on Lawrence University, Ripon College, and St. Norbert College on Saturday and Beloit College and Carroll College on Sunday.
