Condon’s Four Home Runs Lead Foresters to Three MWC Classic Victories
Lake Forest defeats Carroll, Lawrence, and Ripon, falls to St. Norbert and Beloit

Christy Condon hit .643 with four home runs on the weekend.
JANESVILLE, WI - The Lake Forest College softball team posted a 3-2 record at the Midwest Conference Classic over the weekend (April 8-9). The Foresters defeated Carroll College 7-1, Lawrence University 7-6, and Ripon College 2-1 on Saturday before falling 5-3 to St. Norbert College and 4-3 to Beloit College on Sunday. Lake Forest is now 12-10 overall this season and 6-3 in league play.

The Foresters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Carroll. Senior Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) singled to lead off the frame and later scored from third on a suicide squeeze by sophomore Erin Ruberg (Cincinnati, OH/McNicholas). After Wegner was safe at home, Ruberg also beat the throw to first and junior Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park), who was on second at the start of the play, hustled home with another run.

After the Lady Pioneers scored one in the top of the fifth, Watts doubled home freshman Anna Risi (Highland Park, IL/Highland Park) in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead.

Lake Forest plated four more in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Christy Condon (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) drove in the first two with a home run to deep left-center field. Freshman Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, IL/Grayslake) walked, was sacrificed to second, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch. Wegner scored the final tally from second when the leftfielder misplayed a single by Risi.

Freshman Jen Mattern (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) earned the victory. She surrendered just one unearned run on five base hits while striking out six batters and walking four.

The Foresters fell behind in the first inning against Lawrence but tied the score in the top of the second when Risi singled in junior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) with two outs.

The Vikings scored again in the third and led 2-1 until the top of the fifth. Wegner walked, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Watts. An error and another walk loaded the bases and singles by senior Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) and Condon brought home three more runs.

Lake Forest scored two more runs in the sixth on a couple of errors and some aggressive baserunning by Wegner and junior Kim Silvers (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass).

Lawrence cut the lead to one with four runs in the bottom of the sixth but was unable to tie the game. Just three of the six runs allowed by sophomore Rachael Pasdo (Hoffman Estates, IL/William Fremd) were earned and she earned the victory. Classmate Kendra Grant (Bothell, WA/Bothell) came in with two outs in the sixth and finished the game for her third career save.

Grant went the distance against Ripon and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out two.

The Foresters took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Wegner singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice, stole third, and scored on a Watts single.

Ripon tied the game in the top of the seventh, setting up a dramatic finish in the bottom of the inning. After a pair of groundouts, Condon ended the game with her second home run of the day.

Wegner doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning against St. Norbert on Sunday and, after a sacrifice bunt, Watts singled her in for the first run of the game. The lead did not last very long, however, as the Green Knights scored five times in the top of the second.

The Foresters scored one in the second inning on an RBI triple by Wegner and plated one more in the fourth on Condon’s third home run of the weekend, but would get no closer.

Lake Forest fell behind early again against Beloit when the Buccaneers scored three times in the bottom of the first inning.

Condon tripled to lead off the fourth inning and scored on a Jeziorny single. The Foresters tied the game in the sixth when Watts singled with two outs and Condon followed with her fourth home run of the weekend, sixth of the season, and eighth of her career.

Beloit scored the game winner, however, in the bottom of the seventh.

Condon batted .643 (9-for-14) on the weekend with five runs scored and eight driven in. She added a double and triple to the four round-trippers for a 1.714 slugging percentage. Wegner was 8-for-16 with three stolen bases and six runs scored and Watts batted .375 with four runs batted in.

St. Norbert and Monmouth College were each 4-1 on the weekend while Lawrence, Ripon, and Grinnell College each joined Lake Forest at 3-2. Beloit and Carroll were each 2-3, Illinois College went 1-4, and Knox was winless at the event.

The Foresters will host North Central College Thursday (April 13) at 4:00 p.m. and Grinnell Saturday (April 15) afternoon at 2:00.
