FORESTERS CLIMB TO TOP OF MWC AFTER LEAGUE'S OPENING WEEKEND

Halfway through the Midwest Conference South Division regular season, Lake Forest, the Division's pre-season favorite, finds themselves tied for the league's top spot with Grinnell, whom the Foresters split a doubleheader with on Sunday (April 16th). Both Lake Forest and Grinnell have 3-1 marks in the MWC South.

The Foresters started their weekend by sweeping visiting Knox on Saturday (April 15th). Behind the strong arm of senior pitcher Cari Poznansky (Morton Grove, IL/Maine East H.S.), the Foresters took the first game, 3-0. Poznansky allowed two hits and faced just one batter over the minimum. She struck out three while not giving up a walk. Freshman battery mate Jenn Reifenberg (Skokie, IL/Niles West H.S.) supplied the bulk of the offense with her two-run homerun.

In the second contest, sophomore Chris Laurine (Richmond, IL/Richmond-Burton H.S.) got the win on the mound and drove in four runs at the plate. She finished with two hits in her three at bats. Both of her hits went for extra bases - a double and a homerun. Six other Foresters got one hit as the team pounded out eight hits.

Lake Forest dropped their first MWC game of the season when visiting Grinnell took advantage of three Forester errors to score four unearned runs on Sunday. The Pioneers won the game by final of 5-2. Hard-luck loser Poznansky pitched all seven innings.

In Sunday's nightcap, Lake Forest needed just six innings to take care of Grinnell, 9-1. Laurine nearly single-handedly handled the Pioneers. She not only got the win on the mound by allowing just five hits in six strong innings, but her grand slam in the fifth inning broke the game open for the Foresters. She finished the game two for four at the plate, while junior Kim Magee (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Oswego H.S.) went four for four with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Lake Forest will be on the road for the remaining six games of their regular season. The Foresters will travel to University of Chicago for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday (April 18th) before closing out their regular season at Illinois College on Friday (April 21st) and at Monmouth on Saturday (April 22nd). Two teams from each of the MWC's two divisions will meet for the conference title on May 5-6 at site of the South Division regular season champion.
