Day Two in Florida Results in Split for the Foresters
Team defeats Baldwin Wallace but falls to SUNY Cortland

Alissa Mildebrath had three base hits against Cortland.
KISSIMMEE, FL - The Forester softball team continued play in the Rebel Spring Games Monday (March 10), defeating Baldwin-Wallace College 2-1 and falling to the State University of New York at Cortland 4-2. Lake Forest is now 2-1 after the split. Baldwin-Wallace fell to 1-2 and Cortland is 4-0.

There was no score through six innings against Baldwin Wallace. Sophomore shortstop Tina Koludrovic (Darien, IL/Downers Grove South) led off the top of the seventh with the second of the Foresters' three base hits in the game. With one out, freshman Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) singled to put runners on first and second. Sophomore first baseman Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) grounded the ball to her counterpart, whose errant throw to third base allowed Koludrovic to score and Wegner to advance all the way to third base. Sophomore Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) pinch-hit and drove in Wegner with a sacrifice fly.

Baldwin-Wallace scored its only run of the game off of junior Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield) in the bottom of the seventh. They may have scored more had it not been for the defensive exploits of senior second baseman Megan Gibson (Brown Deer, WI/Brown Deer). With one out, Gibson dove and stopped a ball in the hole to prevent the tying run from scoring from second. The next hitter grounded to Gibson, who tagged the runner heading for second and threw to first to complete the game-ending double play. The Foresters completed four twin-killings in the game.

Cortland scored twice in the third inning and added another in the top of fifth before senior third baseman Robyn Slater (Granite City, IL/Granite City) doubled in Mildebrath in the bottom of the inning for Lake Forest's first run of the game.

After the Red Dragons scored one more in the top of the sixth, the Foresters mounted one last rally in their half of the frame. Gibson drew a pinch-hit walk with one out. She eventually scored after junior pitcher Nancy Findeisen (Beecher, IL/ Beecher) got her second hit of the game, Wegner walked, and Koludrovic singled. Mildebrath's bid for her fourth base hit of the contest failed and neither team scored in the seventh.

Findeisen took the loss, dropping her record to 1-1 on the year. Lake Forest had a season-high 10 hits and left 11 runners on base. Cortland left six on base and had eight singles and a home run.

Tuesday (March 11) afternoon, the Foresters will take on Muskingum College at 12:30 and the College of New Jersey at 4:10. Muskingum will also enter the day with a 2-1 record and New Jersey is 0-2.
