Alissa Mildebrath now has a school record 143 career hits.
TUCSON, AZ - The Lake Forest College softball team won six of 10 games from Saturday, March 5, through Thursday, March 10, during its Spring Break trip to Tucson, Arizona. It was the sixth consecutive season that the Foresters posted a record of at least .500 on its season-opening southern trip.

The team defeated Gallaudet University 13-5 to open the season. Junior shortstop Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) hit the squad’s first home run of the trip during a nine-run third inning. Junior Justeen Streich (Arlington Heights, IL/Hersey) and sophomores Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park) and Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, IL/Normal) and each had a pair of base hits in the game and both Wegner and junior Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) drove in three runs. Sophomore Kim Silvers (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) pitched all five innings for the victory.

Biola handed the Foresters their first loss of the season later on Saturday. Lake Forest managed just two baserunners on a walk and an error in a 5-0 no-hitter that ended after just five innings due to rain.

The Foresters rebounded with an 8-4 triumph over Wisconsin Lutheran College the following morning. Senior Hannah Starck (Aurora, IL/Aurora West) batted 3-for-3 in the contest, sophomore Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) had a pair of base hits, and Wegner drove in three runs for the second straight day. Freshman Kendra Grant (Bothell, WA/Bothell) earned the complete-game victory in her pitching debut.

A 3-2 loss to Viterbo College Sunday afternoon evened Lake Forest’s record at 2-2. Senior Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township) was 0-for-3 in the game but scored one of the Foresters’ runs and drove in the other. Wegner and Watts each stole two bases.

Lake Forest held on for an 8-7 win over DeSales University Monday morning. Senior Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) was 3-for-4 to become the program’s all-time hits leader with 137 in her career. Wegner and Closson each had a pair of base hits and Riddle belted her first home run of the year. Grant pitched the final two innings to save Closson’s first win of the season.

The Foresters knocked off Wheaton College 6-5 Monday afternoon to raise their record to 4-2. Mildebrath led off the bottom of the first with her first home run of the year and added a single later in the game. Feeney, Riddle, and Streich also finished with two base hits. Freshman Rachael Pasdo (Hoffman Estates, IL/William Fremd) went the distance in her debut to earn the victory.

After a day off on Tuesday, the team played three times on Wednesday, starting with a dramatic 11-9 win over Dakota State University in the morning. Freshman Jessica Kirincich (Channahon, IL/Minooka) was the hitting star with a 4-for-4 performance that included a one-out double that sparked a three-run seventh inning. She also tripled, scored twice, and added three RBI. Mildebrath and Feeney, who scored three times, each had two base hits. Grant pitched the entire game for her second victory.

DeSales exacted some revenge Wednesday afternoon by coming out on top of a nine-inning 11-10 decision. Feeney homered twice and singled in the contest and Riddle also had three hits, including her second round-tripper of the year. Both players drove in three runs and both Wegner and Kirincich had two base hits and as many RBI.

The Foresters also lost by one (3-2) to Jamestwon College in their third game of the day. Watts, who was 3-for-4 in the game, drove in Wegner with both of the team’s runs. Riddle added a pair of base hits and Closson surrendered just three base hits and three unearned runs in the loss.

Lake Forest finished the trip on a high note with a 5-0 triumph over Bethany Lutheran College Thursday morning. Pasdo allowed just one base hit and struck out six in her first career shutout. Mildebrath and Watts each recorded two hits and Watts added a pair of runs batted in.

Riddle batted .406 on the trip and led the squad with 13 hits and 22 total bases. Feeney scored a team-high 11 runs and tied Riddle for the lead with three doubles and two homers. Wegner knocked in 10 runs and Watts swiped eight of the team’s 31 stolen bases. Lake Forest batted .322 while its opponents hit just .233 in the 10 games combined.

The Forester will resume play on Tuesday, March 29, with a doubleheader at home against Aurora University at 3:00 p.m. The team will also host two games against Robert Morris College that Friday (April 1) and begin Midwest Conference play with a twin-bill at home versus Illinois College the following afternoon.
