Follow With No-Hitter
Junior Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield) had her bid for a no-hitter broken up with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. She struck out four Bridgewater State batters and walked one. A trio of sophomores each had two base hits in the game. First baseman Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) singled and scored in the second inning and had an RBI double and another run scored in the fifth. Catcher Justeen Streich (Arlington Heights, IL/Hersey) also singled in the second and drove in a run with another base hit in the third. Left fielder Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township) had a base hit in the third, an RBI double in the fifth, and scored twice. The Foresters scored at least one run in every inning but the fourth. They plated two in the third and three in the fifth. Defensively, the team handled nine groundouts and five flyouts without committing an error. In Lake Forest's second game of the day, freshman Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) and Clerkin combined to hold New Jersey City University without a hit in the five-inning game. It was the sixth no-hitter in school history. Closson started and was perfect through four innings, striking out two. Clerkin was in the pitcher's circle in the fifth inning when the leadoff batter reached on an error. She retired the next three hitters in order to preserve the no-hitter. Feeney had two more hits, scored once, and drove in a pair of runs. Freshman shortstop Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) had a double to lead off the bottom of the first inning and a bunt single in the second. She also scored twice. In addition to recording the victory, Closson contributed on offense with a pair of RBI singles. Lake Forest scored twice in the first inning and added four more in the second. Two more runs in the bottom of the fourth closed out the scoring. On Thursday (March 13) afternoon, the Foresters will play the final two games of their Spring Break trip to Florida. If they defeat both Alfred University (3:00 p.m.) and Anderson College (4:50 p.m.), they will return home with a 7-2 record, the program's best start to a season since the 1986 team began 12-0. Lake
