Foresters Finish Spring Break Trip With Pair of Victories, 7-2 Record
Team defeats Alfred University and Anderson University on final day

Shannon Clerkin was 3-for-3 against Alfred and allowed just one run on four hits.
KISSIMMEE, FL - The Lake Forest College softball team completed its annual Spring Break trip with a 7-2 record after notching a pair of victories on Thursday (March 13) over Alfred University (4-1) and Anderson University (4-0, 8 innings). The 7-2 start is Lake Forest's best since beginning the 1986 season with 12 straight wins. Alfred fell to 0-8 and Anderson dropped to 2-6.

Sophomore pitcher Shannon Clerkin (Barneveld, WI/Barneveld) almost single-handedly led the team to the triumph over Alfred, her first career win. She did not allow a baserunner until two outs in the fifth and surrendered just one run on four base hits in the game. Offensively, the left-hander was 3-for-3 with two triples, three runs scored, and one batted in. She finished the week with a .455 batting average (5-for-11) and a 0.88 earned run average in eight innings of work.

The Foresters got on the scoreboard in the second inning, scored one more in the fourth, and, after allowing an Alfred run in the top of the sixth, plated the game's final two runs in the bottom of the inning.

In the second game, junior pitcher Nancy Findeisen (Beecher, IL/ Beecher) stole the show, shutting out Anderson and driving in the winning run with a double in the top of the eighth inning. She struck out nine batters and did not issue a walk during the two-hitter.

The game was scoreless for the first seven innings. By rule, both teams are allowed to begin each extra inning with a runner on second base. In the top of the eighth, a sacrifice bunt put that runner on third with one out. Findeisen then doubled her in and later scored ahead of sophomore shortstop Tina Koludrovic (Darien, IL/Downers Grove South) on a bases-loaded single by freshman third baseman Clare Longfellow (Wilmette, IL/New Trier). Sophomore center fielder Kristen Feeney's (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township) RBI single extended her hitting streak to five games and closed out the scoring. Findeisen struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the inning and got the third to pop out.

Feeney finished the week with a team-high nine base hits and a .360 batting average. Freshman shortstop/third baseman Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) hit .389 and is tied with Koludrovic and sophomore second baseman Alissa Mildebrath (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) with a team-high six runs scored. Koludrovic and Mildebrath are also tied for the team lead in runs batted in with five.

Four Forester pitchers combined for a 0.93 earned run average for the week. Findeisen was 3-1 and fellow junior Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield) was 2-1.

The team will be off for a couple weeks before traveling to Benedictine University on March 28 for a doubleheader. Lake Forest will also play twice at North Central College the following day.
