KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Lake Forest College softball team split a pair of games on Friday (March 14) to finish 6-4 on its trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida. The Foresters fell 7-0 to Marian College (Indiana) before defeated Washington College (Maryland) 9-3.

Marian scored three times in the top of the fourth and added three in the fifth and one more in the seventh.

Sophomore Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) recorded two of Lake Forest’s four base hits – all singles – in the contest. Classmates Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) and Sam Pinsonneault (Manchester, N.H./New Hampton) had the others.

The Foresters took the early lead against Washington with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci) tripled in Norton with two outs and scored on a single by freshman Sarah Brusig (Rifle, Colo./Rifle), who was making her first collegiate start.

Washington tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third but the Foresters answered with two in the fourth when sophomore Shelby Neill’s (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian) belted a two-run home run, her first of the season. Lake Forest plated two more in the fifth when sophomore Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) doubled and scored on senior Christy Condon’s (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) fourth round-tripper of the year.

After Washington scored in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 6-3, the Foresters added two more runs in the top of the sixth. Pfund, who had tripled in the second inning and doubled in the fourth, added another double to lead off the inning. Brusig then singled to drive in a run, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher.

Brusig added her third run-scoring single of the game in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Senior Kendra Grant (Bothell, Wash./Bothell) did not walk a batter during her fourth complete game of the season. She raised her record to 3-3 and lowered her earned run average to a team-best 3.14.

Norton led the team with a .480 batting average and five doubles on the trip. Condon and Pfund batted .414 and .385, respectively, and tied for the team lead with 13 RBI apiece. Rainey hit .355 and scored a team-high 10 runs.

The Foresters’ first games after returning to campus will be played on Wednesday, March 26, at Carthage College. The doubleheader will begin at 2:30 p.m.
