KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Forester softball team won two of six midweek (March 13-15) contests at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida to finish its Spring Break trip with a 4-6 record. Lake Forest fell 4-2 in nine innings to Kean University and 3-1 to UW-River Falls on Tuesday. On Wednesday the Foresters edged out SUNY Geneseo 4-3 before losing 9-0 to Ithaca College. Finally, the team routed McDaniel College 7-0 and dropped a 2-0 decision to Denison University on Thursday.

Lake Forest junior Kendra Grant (Bothell, Wash./Bothell) gave up just one earned run in the nine-inning loss to Kean. Freshmen Tracy Rainey (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park), Shelby Neill (Manitou Beach, Mich./Lenawee Christian), and Jill Pfund (Morenci, Mich./Morenci) each recorded one of the Foresters’ four base hits and senior Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, Ill./Normal) had the other.

Kean scored a run in the top of the first inning and another in the fifth. Lake Forest plated one in the bottom of the fifth and sent the game to extra innings on Riddle’s RBI single with two outs in the seventh. The Foresters were unable to match Keans two runs in the ninth.

Neill had Lake Forest’s only base hit against River Falls. Just two of the three runs surrendered by freshman Jeanette Andresen (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) were earned as she suffered her first loss of the season.

The Foresters took the lead in the top of the first when junior Christy Condon (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) reached third on an outfield error and score on a wild pitch. River Falls pulled ahead with two runs in the third inning and the Falcons added one in the fifth.

Condon, Neill, and senior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) each had two of the team’s 10 base hits against Geneseo and Jeziorny drove in a pair. Forester extra base hits included doubles by Jeziorny and freshman Mallory Norton (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) and triples by Neill and sophomore Hannah Michal (Lake Villa, Ill./Grayslake). Andresen gave up three runs on seven hits and raised her record to 3-1.

Lake Forest scored two runs in the top of the second inning, surrendered one in the fifth and scored one in both the sixth and seventh. Geneseo plated two in the bottom of the seventh but fell short of completing the comeback.

Rainey had both of the Foresters’ base hits against Ithaca, a team that has been ranked among the top five in the nation in each of the first three National Fastpitch Coaches Association polls of the year.

The Bombers scored five times in the top of the first inning and added two in both the second and third.

Grant pitched Lake Forest’s first shutout of the season against McDaniel. She allowed just five base hits in the contest. Condon batted 3-for-3 in the game and senior Kim Silvers (Walton, Ind./Lewis Cass) was 3-for-4. Both players doubled in the contest, as did Michal, who also stole her team-high fifth base of the season. Neill drove in two runs and first career base hits were recorded by Andresen and fellow freshmen Dani Marler (Hillsboro, Mo./Mo. Acad. Math, Science, Comp) and Jess Abezetian (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South).

Lake Forest scored once in each of the first two innings and three times in the bottom of the third. The Foresters closed out the scoring with two more in the sixth.

Michal, Neill, and junior Erin Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) accounted for the Foresters’ three base hits and Jeziorny walked three times against Denison. Michal’s hit was her second triple of the trip.

Junior Rachael Pasdo (Hoffman Estates, Ill./William Fremd) held Denison scoreless for the first five innings before giving up the only two runs of the contest in the bottom of the sixth.

Condon finished the trip with a team-best .407 batting average and tied for the team lead with five runs scored and five driven in. At .364, Neill had the next-highest batting average among the team’s regulars. Pfund matched Condon’s five runs scored and Jeziorny her five RBI. Rainey batted .276 with four runs scored, three doubles, and four runs batted in.

The Foresters’ next contest will be their home opener against Carthage College on Tuesday, March 27. The doubleheader will begin at 3:30 p.m.
