FORESTERS DROP A PAIR OF 8 INNING HEARTBREAKERS TO ST. XAVIER
It's a hard enough pill to swallow after losing both games of a double header, but when both are extra inning affairs, it is extremely tough.  But that's exactly what the Lake Forest softball team had to do on Saturday afternoon when they fell to St. Xavier University, an NAIA Division I school, 5-3 and 4-1, both in eight innings.  The Foresters' overall record now stands at 2-10.
The Foresters received solid pitching from freshman Kate Parkinson in the first game and junior Cari Poznansky in the second game, but stranded a total of 20 runners in the two games.  Parkinson went seven-plus innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on seven hits.  She held the Cougars scoreless for the first five innings.  Freshman Chris Laurine got the final three outs in the eighth inning.  In the second game, Poznansky went all eight innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits.  After allowing a run in the first inning, Poznansky held St. Xavier scoreless for the next six innings, before surrendering three runs in the extra frame.
In the first half of the doubleheader, Lake Forest jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the third inning.  Sophomore Karla Gribble and freshman Megan Smith, who had three hits for the game, started the inning with back-to-back doubles.  After a Jessie Griffin walk and a Karen Siska fielder's choice, sophomore Kim Magee doubled to score Griffin.  Siska scored when Kara Ellerby, a freshman, reached on an error.  SXU got two runs in the sixth inning, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to seal the victory.  Lake Forest had the bases loaded with one out in the final inning, but could not get a run across the plate.
Late inning troubles again plagued Lake Forest in Saturday's second game.  In the seventh inning the Foresters had the bases loaded with no outs, but saw their next three hitters record outs, capped by a Laurine lineout to centerfield.  It was one of five lineouts for the Foresters in the game.  Lake Forest scored their only run in the fifth inning when Siska singled in junior Mary Gerke with two outs.
