Junior drove in winning run of MWC Championship Game

Erin Watts holds the single-
season school record for hits.
LAKE FOREST, IL - Lake Forest College softball player Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park) was named Forester Athlete of the Week on Thursday (May 11) for her performance at the Midwest Conference Championship Tournament the previous weekend (May 5-6).

Lake Forest, the tournament host, defeated Lawrence University 4-0 and Grinnell College 8-2 on Friday to reach Saturday’s championship round. Watts had her nine-game hitting streak snapped in the first game and was 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the second. The junior center fielder also threw out a runner at the plate against Grinnell.

Watts was 1-for-3 in the team’s 4-1 loss to Grinnell early Saturday afternoon. In the Championship Game, however, Watts helped lead Lake Forest to a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Pioneers. The home team trailed 2-0 before she led off the sixth inning with a single and later scored one of the team’s two runs in the frame. She came up to bat again with one out a runner on second base in the bottom of the seventh and drove in the winning run with a double to the left field corner.

The double was Watts’ school-record 52nd base hit of the season and the 99th run batted in of her career, one shy of the team record.

The Forester Athlete of the Week is chosen by the Athletic Department on Thursdays. Watts also earned the award once as a freshman, twice last year, and on March 23.
