Foresters’ Season Ends at NCAA Regional Tournament
Team finishes the year with 24-14 record

Ashley Closson scored twice
and struck out five batters in
her final collegiate game.
ROCK ISLAND, IL - The Lake Forest College softball team dropped a pair of games at the NCAA Regional Tournament at Augustana College. The Foresters fell 2-1 in nine innings to UW-Eau Claire on Thursday (May 11) and 7-4 to Aurora University the next day. Lake Forest finished the season with a record of 24-15.

The game against Eau Claire, the tournament’s top seed, was still scoreless after seven innings. With one out in the top of the eighth, Lake Forest sophomore Christy Condon (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East) extended her school record with her 10th home run of the season to give the Foresters a 1-0 lead.

However, a two-out single scored a Blugold runner from second in the bottom of the eighth to extend the game and Eau Claire plated the winning run on a sacrifice fly to left field in the ninth.

Sophomore Kendra Grant (Bothell, WA/Bothell) allowed just two runs on seven hits in the contest. Junior Lisa Jeziorny (Orland Park, IL/Carl Sandburg) and senior Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) each had a pair of base hits in the game.

Aurora took the early lead on Friday with a run in the top of the first inning.

The Foresters bounced back with two in the bottom of the second on RBI singles by junior Jenny Riddle (Bloomington, IL/Normal) and sophomore Rachael Pasdo (Hoffman Estates, IL/William Fremd).

The Spartans regained the lead with four runs in the third inning and added one in the fourth and sixth.

Lake Forest junior Kim Silvers (Walton, IN/Lewis Cass) doubled in Closson and Pasdo in the bottom of the sixth with the game’s final runs. Pasdo finished 3-for-4 with a double in the contest, Condon and Riddle each had two base hits, and Closson scored twice. Closson also struck out five batters in four-and-two-thirds innings of relief.

Closson and fellow senior Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) are the only two players on the team that will be lost to graduation. Wegner scored more runs in her career than any other player in team history and ranks among the career leaders (top five) in base hits, doubles, home runs, total bases, and stolen bases. Closson is the team’s all-time leader in saves and is listed among the program’s best in career ERA, victories, winning percentage, innings pitched, shutouts, and strikeouts.
