Furgerson, Magee, Sponsel, and Valentour Named First Team All-MWC
Forester's starting outfield deemed best in the conference

LAKE FOREST, IL - Lake Forest College had four representatives on the 2001 All-Midwest Conference softball team. Freshman pitcher Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield), senior outfielder/designated hitter Kim Magee (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Oswego), senior outfielder Kim Sponsel (San Diego, CA/Mira Mesa), and junior outfielder Erin Valentour (Bolingbrook, IL/Downers Grove South) were part of the 12-member All-MWC South Division squad.

Furgerson compiled a 6-1 record (plus one save) and a 1.99 earned run average in league play. She pitched 58.2 innings and allowed 48 hits and 19 runs (13 earned) while striking out 31 and walking just three. She led the MWC South Division in wins and earned run average.

Magee was named to the All-Conference First Team for the fourth consecutive season. She was tied for third in the MWC with 13 runs scored and two home runs. In MWC games, Magee hit .326 (14-for-43) with nine runs batted in and four stolen bases.

Sponsel hit .366 (15-for-41) in league play. She added 14 runs scored (second in the MWC) and seven runs batted in. Her nine walks gave her an on-base percentage of .471.

In 11 conference games, Valentour batted .344 (11-for-32) with four runs scored and four runs batted in.

Lake Forest finished the 2001 season with an 18-17-1 overall record. They were 9-3-1 in the MWC and won the South Division. At the MWC Championship Tournament, the Foresters took third place.
