May 9, 2002 Contact: Mike Wajerski, SID Foresters Sweep MWC South Division Coach, Player
of the Year Honors
For the second straight season and the third of her six-year career, head coach Diane Kanney was chosen as the South's Coach of the Year. She also earned the award following the 1998 and 2001 seasons. This year, Kanney led the Foresters to their second-ever Midwest Conference Championship and their first since 1988. After last year's team tied the school record for wins in a season with 18, the 2002 squad shattered it and takes a 26-10 record into its first-ever regional tournament this weekend (May 10-13th). The Foresters made it a clean sweep of the league's glamour awards with Alissa Mildebrath's (Carol Stream, IL/West Chicago) selection as South Division Player of the Year. The freshman second baseman led the conference in home runs, with four in 13 league games. She was also tied for third in the MWC in runs scored (11) and total bases (28), was fourth in slugging percentage (.667), and finished tied for sixth in runs batted in (9). Overall, the Foresters' leadoff hitter leads the team with a school-record eight home runs, 23 runs scored, 69 total bases, and a slugging percentage of .595. Mildebrath is the fourth player in the program's history to earn divisional Player of the Year honors. Angie Hanes was the North Division Player of the Year in 1996. Melissa Schneider (1998) and Kim Magee (2000) each earned the honor after Lake Forest's move to the South Division. Senior Jenn Reifenberg (Skokie, IL/Niles West) was one of three other Foresters to be named to the All-Midwest Conference South Division Team for the first time. The catcher was tied for second with seven doubles in league play and was seventh in the MWC with a .606 slugging percentage. Her overall total of 12 doubles is a new Forester record and she also leads the team with nine walks. Sophomore Nancy Findeisen (Beecher, IL/ Beecher) is nearly finished with the best season ever for a Forester pitcher. She is 4-2 with a 1.29 earned run average in the conference and 13-5 with a 0.72 ERA overall. Despite ranking 10th in the conference in innings pitched (38), she is second in the league with 43 strikeouts. Overall, Findeisen has set school records with 128 strikeouts and nine shutouts. Joining Mildebrath as the only two freshmen on either division's all-conference team was Lake Forest's Tina Koludrovic (Darien, IL/Downers Grove South). The shortstop was sixth in the league with a .442 batting average and was tied for third in hits (19), fifth in total bases (26), and sixth in RBI (9). The Foresters' leading hitter (.392) also leads the team with a school-record 38 base hits and five stolen bases. The All-Midwest Conference Teams are selected by a poll of the league's
coaches.
