Team wins twice, loses twice

Justeen Streich drove in four of the team's 10 runs in the tourney.
ALMA, MI - The Lake Forest College softball team won twice and lost twice at the NCAA Regional Tournament over the weekend (May 7-9) to place fourth at the event. The Foresters defeated Defiance College 4-3 but fell to host Alma College 6-0 on Friday. The team’s 5-0 victory on Saturday knocked Edgewood College out of the tourney but a 5-1 loss to Augustana College on Sunday ended the squad’s 2004 season. Lake Forest finished the year with a 28-13 record.

The Foresters took an early lead against Defiance on Friday with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. All three scored on freshman Jenny Riddle’s (Bloomington, IL/Normal) two-out, bases-loaded single that was misplayed by the center fielder. Two errors in the fifth inning allowed freshman Erin Watts (Evergreen Park, IL/Evergreen Park) to score her second run of the game and gave Lake Forest a 4-0 lead.

Three hits, an error, and a pair of wild pitches brought home three unearned runs for Defiance in the seventh. Sophomore Ashley Closson (Murphysboro, IL/Murphysboro) struck out 10 batters in the game, the most by any Forester pitcher this season. She finished the season with a 7-6 record and 1.25 earned run average.

Singles by junior Justeen Streich (Arlington Heights, IL/Hersey) and freshman Mackenzie Knowling (Lafayette, IN/McCutcheon) were the team’s only base hits in the loss to Alma. The visitors’ best scoring threat came in the top of the third inning when they loaded the bases, but the next three batters struck out.

After taking the loss against Alma, senior Leigh Anne Furgerson (Carmel, IN/Westfield) rebounded with a two-hitter of her own against Edgewood on Saturday. She matched a career-high with eight strikeouts in her 15th victory and fifth shutout of the season and did not allow a runner to reach second base.

Riddle doubled to lead off the second inning and eventually scored on an infield single by junior Hannah Starck (Aurora, IL/Aurora West). Streich drove in three more runs with a bases-loaded double in the third. Sophomore Melissa Wegner (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech), who was 2-for-3 in the contest, doubled with two outs in the fourth and scored on a single by Watts, who finished the year with a team-high 28 RBI.

Streich drove in Watts with the Foresters’ only run in the season-ending loss to Augustana. Junior Kristen Feeney (Brookfield, IL/Lyons Township) led off the sixth with a double down the left field line, extending her school record for two-baggers in a season to 15. She also led the team with a .359 batting average.

Furgerson took the loss and finished the year with a 15-6 record, 1.32 ERA, and a team-high 83 strikeouts.

Lake Forest’s 28 victories are the second-highest total in school history. The squad’s 60 doubles, 16 home runs, 49 stolen bases, 1.44 ERA, 32 complete games, and 185 strikeouts also rank second in team history.
